On occasion I enjoy using votive candles in the evening. They add a calming effect and when you use a lot of them provide significant enough light to lower your electricity bills, well kind of... Anyway, having them spread around the house creates a warm and inviting feeling for me. Especially when I use ones with various colors. And for those couples who enjoy a candlelit dinner they provide the perfect romantic atmosphere. But one problem I come across In lighting them is when the wax burns down and it becomes to hard to light the wick without burning my fingers. Well, after many unsuccessful attempts at lighting them with a match I came across this "hack." If your candles are burning too low to reach the wick, light a piece of uncooked spaghetti. It’ll reach into those deep candles and burn long enough to not go out to soon. Problem solved! What do you think of the hack? Do you use candles of any kind in your home. Which types do you buy scented, with different colors? Why do you use them? A Life "hack" refers to any trick, shortcut, skill, or novelty method, that increases productivity and efficiency in all walks of life according to Wikipedia. @dgobucks226 We have wooden matches as long as the spaghetti are here in Switzerland. They are made to be used to light the fireplace, but if I run of of the matches I use one spaghetti string... the smell is not the best.

I love candle light but they do give off some heat so in spring, summer and most of fall I don't use them. Now Christmas for sure, it makes it so much more special. Didn't know about the skettie thingy, I'll have to remember that.

Yes, I understand @rebelann. I find lighting candles especially during winter is the best. It adds an extra cozy feeling during those colder months. That pasta idea is great for birthday candle lighting too so your match doesn't burn out before lighting them all!

@dgobucks226 Yes, it is calming and soothing. I don’t know with the insects but 100% lavender essential helps when you suffer from burns.

Wow! That sounds soothing. I read somewhere lavender keeps insects away. Not sure if candle form will work though but oils do.

Spaghetti I would never have thought of that in a month of Sundays Yet have had the problem many times. We stopped using candles - no idea why, we just did. I know since we moved into our new house that we have not used candles at all. We used to use scented candles, mostly to help reduce the smell of me smoking in the house which wasn't often. I do not smoke cigs in the house at all now. Coupled with not having cats anymore I guess the need for candles just went away.

With three cats, my husband and I don't light candles very often. When we do, one of us is always in the room to prevent a fire. When I light candles, I use a lighter designed for a grill. My cp doesn't allow me to use a hand-held lighter.

Those long lighters are useful too. I also use them. But if they run out of fuel then you have a pasta lighter backup. As long as you have a pack of matches around em]wink[/em] I find lighting candles are best especially during winter. It adds an extra cozy feeling during those colder months.

We've been lighting candles, especially when they get low, with a long pasta noodle for years. It works fine, it just leaves an unpleasant scent.
