Why do we ignore our gut?

I'm not talking about our gastrointestinal systems either, though a fair amount of us ignore that too. I am referring to that instinct within us that says "Hey, something isn't right here" or "Hey, you're about to do something stupid." I enjoy ignoring mine, or so you might believe based on some of my choices in the past. The fact of the matter is that I give too many chances. I know that I give too many chances, and yet I do it anyway, expecting things to change. If you're driving and crash into a mural you thought was a tunnel, backing up and trying again isn't going to miraculously change it into a tunnel. Yet, I am the type that will back up and speed on through anyway. I was going to end this discussion with "Somebody save me from myself." But I'm stubborn and loathe being told what to do. Do you ignore your gut?

Sometimes I ignore my gut feeling. I once dated a man that I had met a few times. I kind of knew that it wasn't a good idea to date him, but I wanted to believe that it was a good idea and I did it anyway. It was NOT a good idea. My gut feeling is usually right, and it was right in this situation, I just chose to ignore it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum In my case the relationship didn't last long, but it was a mistake from the start. He was very racist and I am the complete opposite. I have always had many friends from other countries and I am very interested in other cultures. He also had other opinions and morals that I really didn't share. I ended the relationship and I know it was the right choice.

I've done that with a fella before. We dated for several months. It was more a waste of time for me than anything else. His morals were all wrong and I was embarrassed to date him to be honest. There's a man I'm talking to now and I have a feeling I'm going to ignore my gut on this one.

@Nevena83 Right, and it happens over again with someone new. A man that I was talking to stopped talking to me. Now he's back and says he doesn't handle upset well, he hides away. Well, I can understand that as I am the same way. I'm wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt but am not sure he deserves it.

I think we want to see the best in people but some people do not have a best.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Exactly. We see the good in everyone first, until we are disappointed.

I’ve ignored my gut in the past which led me to unnecessary headache and pain. I’ve learned it’s very dangerous ignoring my gut. Thus, following it will save you from troubles.

All very true statements. I've lived and learned, and well, I still make those same mistakes sometimes.

@ScribbledAdNauseum it happens. The most important part is believing you are wiser and know much better.

@CarolDM Very true. I know that life gives us lessons, and sometimes we must learn them twice over before it really sinks in.

I am the type of person that is more likely to do it anyway, especially if I feel someone is attempting to make me NOT do it.

It depends upon the situation, I do not ignore my gut feeling all the time but sometimes, I get carried away and ignore my gut feeling.

@ScribbledAdNauseum We are human beings and cannot be with feelings, therefore, we get carried away.

Probably going to do that this time. My gut is giving me mixed signals, but I think it's really my gut saying "You're going to regret this"

I am trying to learn NOT to ignore my gut. I chose to listen to my gut on the situation I am referring to here. I think I saved myself a big headache.

I often second guess it. Yesterday, my husband had the day off and we decided to make it a home day. I thought about switching up my routine a little bit, so I'd avoid the thunder storms, but didn't. Got soaked. Today I decided to listen (he was working) and got home just before the rains came.

Ah. When desire for rest is thrown it, it makes thing worse. We're more likely to go for the rest day instead of going ahead and dealing with what we need to.

I think what happens is, we really want whatever it is and then we tend to ignore those warnings..which always sucks.

I saw something yesterday and I wish I could remember exactly what it said. It addresssed this. Something about us only learning from our intuition after the fact.

We do it because we hope things will be different this time, no matter what our brain knows to be true. *sigh* We are too soft-hearted. We do it because we're idiots.

Luckily I've learned to not be that way, but yes I used to be that way quite a lot too. I learned though that some people will never grow up.
