Sometimes It's How You Say It

This post goes right to the heart of something I have been saying for a long time. It is not WHAT is reported in the news that matters sometimes. It is HOW it is reported that matters. Take this recent exchange between president Joe Biden and a reporter who asked a question. The way the media portrays this exchange is "president biden pushes back at a reporter after a press conference." Had this been Trump in the exact same exchange the reporting would have been "president Trump launches a vicious tirade against members of the press." I chose the picture of an angry Biden as well, because when it came to reporting anything about Trump it always portrayed him in a bad light to push the media's narrative that Trump was unfit for office. I will never understand why more people cannot see the spin the media uses as a tactic to advance certain reactions in one scenario and completely opposite reactions in another? This is across all media by the way. "Snap back" from Fox does suggest something snappier than what actually occurred in the exchange. I just want to return to a time when the NEWS alone was reported fairly and accurately, without added spin and bias to drive another story within the real story.

I haven't seen the actual interaction. What I DO know, though, is that Biden later apologized for his response and has never called the press "the enemy of the people". I don't think Trump has EVER apologized for anything in his life. He also loves to disparage the press at every turn. He was so rude to so many journalists asking him questions and as far as I remember he never once apologized.

No need to apologize, he was right.

@NJChicaa Trump. The press IS the enemy of the people (American people).

I've known for a long time that the media tends to spin things out of control. I don't mind reading a headline to get an idea of what's going on, but at the same time, I only believe part of what's said and take most with a grain of salt.

They stopped at tending to spin things a long time ago. Now they just tell their own story, truth be damned.

But the headlines are the worst, and the way they are written almost become the entire story, taken out of context. Such as in my example in this post. The headline would have been "Trump viciously attacks reporter," and if that's all one read without actually watching the exchange or digging deeper into the story, all one walks away with is that Trump viciously attacked a reporter when all he actually did was legitimately rebutt a question. Similar to here. Biden did necessarily "snap" at a reporter. But the context of his reaction to the question is what is more important to understand the whole story. What was the question and why did he snap and was his reaction correct?

@Namelesss There is a lot of truth to that statement. In fact, many times they outright lie.

The media always puts their spin on the news to support or destroy a person.

@porwest What an ingenious idea. Us deciding what it means. Do you remember the movie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington with Jimmy Stewart? Good movie about how the press has a field day with those in office.

Unfortunately true. I wish they would just get back to being honest, or at least TRY to make the appearance of honesty. Just report the news and let US decide what it all means.

@just4him I do remember that movie, and it is an awesome one that deserves some renewed popularity. I'd say they should do a remake of it...but Hollywood would destroy it today and tailor it to their current convoluted view of the world.

I saw the response. It's not the first time Biden has gone off the rails and snapped at some reporter or "dog pony person who asked a question that got under his skin. Talk about unfit for office! But, you know these posts do not result in a reasonable exchange of ideas. They just polarize people to one side or the other. Yet, I must say for the life of me I cannot understand how people do not see past their bias when confronted with actual footage of Biden's behavior. The man cannot even put a cohesive thought together without reading off note cards prepared by his staff. As Rod Stewart said in song "Every Picture Tells A Story." Just look at the footage at the border and the mess the Dems have created there for another example

@porwest Such precise comments. The left views almost every issue from an emotional perspective without considering the rationality behind their agenda. As another example, this "WOKE" thing has gone to a "theatre of the absurd."

@porwest Great example about Islam. Like a chameleon the left changes their positions to accommodate their passionate albeit uninformed base. Use the theater line....anytime

@dgobucks226 As someone famously said of the left, "They stand for nothing because they actually do not believe in anything." I think that is a true statement. They simply adhere to their flavor of the day.

The thing that scares me the most, I think, is the absolute infiltration of liberals into our culture. Most teachers are liberals, and most school administrators are liberals, and so our children get indoctrinated into this ideology. On top of that colleges are all primarily made up of liberals as well. So there's potentially 16 years of liberal "training." On top of that the media is mostly liberal, and Hollywood is mostly liberal. So, from schools to TV to news, to cartoons and television programming... By the time our kids have a chance in life they've already been filled with liberal propaganda, and so many tend to believe in it. Some escape it, but it is really tough for parents to get past it and guide the kids in a more balanced direction. These people have hold of our kids for a very large part of their lives. I don't know how we fight against this, really.

@CarolDM So am I. The unfortunate thing is that we were making progress toward heading back in the right direction. The democrats could not let that happen and while some may disagree, I think they literally stole the election and began a course of power and control I thought would never be possible in this country.

@porwest If I had children I would be very concerned in these times. They are doing the same in the military. Crazy indoctrination everywhere. I am afraid for the future honestly.

@Nakitakona I always encourage one to inform themselves. Part of the problem in the U.S. we have is too many people don't dig deeper to the get the whole story, and as a result, are often misinformed.

I caught an old episode of Johnny Carson from the mid eighties, and they interviewed Sam Donaldson. They talked about President Reagan, and how he liked the President even though he didn't agree with his politics. It was a pleasant conversation that would never happen today. The spin is unbelievable.

The sad part is that there did seem to be a time when the leanings of people in the news media were less apparent. We always knew it was there, but it wasn't so obvious in an earlier time.

They really are. Fox News that is. Granted, they have their far right people. Sean Hannity comes to mind. But mostly they are fair and balanced as their banner suggests. More fair and balanced than any other network which is why I tend to tune in to them more than the others.

The media will always spin stories and headlines as they see fit. We will never get the real unbiased truth. And they will never treat Biden like they treated Trump. Heck, probably no other president will be treated like Trump was. I saw a clip of Biden. I forgot where he was speaking but he was asked a question and he just stood there in silence not saying anything for more than a few seconds. That was very awkward, if not a bit creepy.
