Neighbor At ER With Heat Exhaustion

Earlier this morning I returned the bowl to my neighbor from his watermelon he shared yesterday. He was sitting beside his pool. And he did not look very well.
He had just finished mowing his yard. He said he felt dizzy and light headed. And that he never felt like that before. Scared me so bad. He is 80 and has had heart valve surgery a few years ago.
He did not want me to call 911. So I called his daughter. He went to lay down on his sofa. I got him a cool cloth and some water. His daughter arrived in about 20 minutes with a nurse friend. She assessed him and called 911.
They kept him all day giving him fluids at the emergency room. And said it was probably heat exhaustion. The doctor said it was the right call to get him to the hospital. He responded well to the IV fluids. And never lost consciousness.
Everyone can respond differently to a heat stroke. That is why it is so important to get medical attention. Heat exhaustion can be similar to a heat stroke.
He said he forgot if he drank water or not. I said you probably did not. I will keep a closer check on him now. It scared me really bad.
A link is attached showing you the difference in heat exhaustion and a heat stroke.

I have had heat exhautstion before, and it's not fun. I'm hyper viligiant because I can get it, and not really realize until it's boardering on heat stroke.

@kaylachan I know. My Dad had two and always warned me to be extra careful.

Heatstroke is a very dangerous problem that affects everyone young and old. Thanks for sharing the information on the heatstroke and heat exhaustion. I hope your neighbor recovers from his health challenge quickly.

@CarolDM I do not blame you since if I were in your position seeing your neighbor falling ill, I would be scared as well.

Heat can be much more dangerous than most people realize. I’m glad they were able to fill him with fluids

@wolfgirl569 I agree with you. He is better and staying mostly inside and on his covered deck with the fan. And he is drinking water.

Your neighbor is lucky you showed up and probably saved his life. I can only imagine he might have passed out if he was sitting outside. It's so important to be careful in this oppressive heat.

Wow, I'm glad you were able to check on him when you did. The worst thing about heat exhaustion/heat stroke is that it sneaks up on you quietly. You think you're doing okay, and next thing you know it hits you! And sometimes drinking water alone isn't enough to stop it, especially if you're sweating heavily and losing salt.
I wish either he or his daughter could set up a lawn service to mow his yard so he doesn't have to worry about it anymore. At 80 years old, he doesn't need to be out there in this summer heat/humidity trying to do it himself!

@CarolDM You were definitely his angel!
I can understand his desire to stay busy. I tend to be that way too, and I'm sure when I'm 80 I'll probably be acting just like him.

It was like I was suppose to be there, he told me I was his angel. So nice to hear. And his daughter of course thanked me over and over. He is so funny. His daughter paid for a lawn service last year. But he didn't like the way they cut his grass. Too short he said. So he wants to do it himself. He said he has to stay busy. He got a scare and I hope it will make hm pay attention now.

You are a terrific neighbor, one everyone would like to have. I fuss at the hubby all the time about being out in the heat. It is certainly dangerous for anyone to be out there in the awful heat, especially when you get older. I am so glad you noticed him out there.

That is so scary, I would have called 911 anyway personally, but thankfully it sounds like he will be OK. You were a good neighbor!

That's really scary. My husband was outside pulling weeds out of the sidewalk for about 15 minutes yesterday; and he was feeling lightheaded and dizzy. He will be 80 in August. Everyone needs to stay out of the hot sun.

Yeah it's always necessary to drink water even 8 glasses a day.
