I bought this nice barrel hat on Ross department store Senior Citizen discount day. Was happy with it. I'm wearing it, after I washed it. I wore it 2 times this week. First time, about an inch of white showed up on the outside rim on the back. Today all look at the white smudging in it. It just appears. Nothing touched it, just put it in my carrying bag, when we not wearing it. Got any thoughts about why white smudges appears on my hat?

I see, perspiration does this to the hat? I have a denim barrel hat, and, it never did what my black barrel hat is doing. Any remedy?

@oahuwriter Arm & Hammer Oxi Clean is color safe, but you MUST only use cold water if you use it to wash black clothing. I looked closely to your photo and the "white" seems to come out because the black fabric is coming off from the hat.

My regular pod detergent, Arm & Hammer Oxi Clean & Tide Simply pods. It was fine. I wash my denim barrel hat same way and both were fine. Used dryer too. Any remedy?

I could be wrong but it appears to be salt from someone wearing the hat while sweating profusely.
Is it possible that someone else had used the hat before you bought it?
I have had hats that had the same marks as that.

No, bought it, brand new from Ross Dept. Store to in Senior Citizen discount day. I wiped it with a damp cloth and white coloring disappears.

It started to creep back. So, I wiped it till all black again. Then I sprayed with my white vinegar water mix. 2 hours now, still black.

I don't know what could have caused it except maybe sweat. Did the hat say it was washable?

@oahuwriter I would try googling ways to clean perspiration stains...or just try scrubbing it with some soap.

It's 100% cotton, so it's washable. I did wash it after I brought it home, it was fine, no white marks anywhere. Perspiration? Any remedy?

Ahh, but it was black after I washed it. Me too, don't understand why it does turn white. It's doing fine now, since I sprayed it with my vinegar water mix.

No, odd that dampness brings back black color. Here is the hat today. I'm going to leave it as a decorations.

Two things one is perhaps the hat was dyed and the dye is coming off and second I have had with marks show up from laundry powder after I have washed clothes so if you watched it in a machine it could be that, Otherwise I do not know,

No, couldn't be from laundry, because I checked, all black when took out of dryer. It's a mystery. Now my white vinegar water mix spray, is working. After spraying, no white smudges.
