I know, it is July, but I have quite a lot of thoughts about the winter. So, I thought I would ask how many here owns a generator. This summer has been brutal, in a lot of states 3 digit temps. When, Hurricane Katrina hit, a lot of people rented generators, and died because they really didn't know how to use them. I sure this winter won't be too bad. This year was rough, guess that's why I think about it.

I do not have a generator. If we were to lose electrical power we would still have gas heat, and we have oil lamps and candles and flash lights. I hope you do not have a terrible winter. Yes, people need to know about venting generators, etc. to keep the gas fumes out of the house.

It's a good thing you have one. Lots of people lose a lot of food in the winter.

Yeah, I think everyone here, when we go without power, people here just be giving people food, so that it won't spoil.

@popciclecold Yeah. My wife wants to clobber me every time the power goes out and we still don't have one handy.

I’ve thought about getting a solar generator. My brother has a gasoline-powered one, but I would just prefer to have something for a couple of hours. If the power’s going to be out longer than that I’ll go to a hotel.

@popciclecold — they are definitely not strong enough to run a freezer or air conditioner. They’re quite popular with campers.

Yes, we have one but luckily we haven't had to use it this year. All it takes is one really bad storm to knock out all the power and then you sit around day after day waiting for them to fix it!

Here in Venezuela it is almost mandatory. The electricity goes out instantly and for up to 6 hours. Almost everyone has one and knows how to use it.
