Question For Today: How Do You Protect Your Tomatoes From Harmful Insects?

I take great pride in growing my own produce during the summer months. Being able to eat homegrown vegetables or fruit that are not chemically treated is healthier, in addition to tasting better than store bought. And it will cost you much less than shopping around for a decent price.
One problem I do encounter though, is the invasion of larvae and other insects which can destroy my tomato crop and other veggies I grow. One method I read about to repel these pests is to plant certain types of flowers/plants near your veggies or fruits. A few I discovered were marigolds, basil, garlic, and sage.
There are other methods one can use to protect your veggies/fruits. Here are a few suggestions:
-Hand picking the insects off the leaves as you discover them and throwing them in a bucket of soapy water.
-Attracting birds to your garden area. Birds eat a tremendous amount of insects and installing a feeder can prove beneficial.
-Using a homemade pesticide spray to keep pests off your tomato crop. Suggestions can be found online. An easy one is a soapy spray. Mix 1 tablespoon of mild liquid soap with water in a quart spray bottle.
Have you tried any of these suggestions above? Or have you found a method not listed here that works that you could share with us? How do you ward off those pests?

Yes, they say marigolds are very useful in keeping away pests.
Other helpful plants to put around your tomatoes are mint, parsley, chives, and geraniums.
Another insect spray uses vegetable oil, eco-friendly liquid soap, mixed with water in a spray bottle. Great for killing aphids, green flies and spider mites. Check out the video if interested...

@dgobucks226 I am not interested for the moment. I will have to teach Luna to keep away from my plants. Last year I had a few plants in containers. Luna was the Queen of the garden.

You know I cannot remember now, We grew our own tomatoes when I lived in Latvia and my husband and a friend of his did all the taking care of the tomatoes but I do remember they use all-natural stuff to protect the tomatoes from bugs no pesticides and the tomatoes were always good,

That's right. I found a few ways to prepare natural bug sprays on you tube.
I also use a tomato cage to keep the plant's leaves protected by keeping them off the ground. A crop cover is also useful to shield the plants from flying insects.

I plant "friendly" plants and flowers to protect the tomato plants. I plant nasturtiums under the tomato plants, they protect the tomatoes and we eat the flowers. They are pretty to decorate salads and you make excellent fritters with them.
I spray with soapy water if I notice some bugs and I remove the caterpillars with a stick and I throw in a bucket ot water.
Birds also love to peck the tomatoes, I would avoid to attract them in the vegetable garden.

@dgobucks226 I let the tomatoes run on the ground, I have protected the ground around the tomatoes with a special fabric. In the south of Italy they let the tomatoes run on the ground, if there is no humidity they grow healthy.
We do not have squirrels in this area, but we have a large variety of birds and some like to peck the tomatoes.

I worry more about squirrels than the birds who will take one bite out of a ripening tomato and leave it on the ground. How wasteful

to fight insect pests huh?
I've never tried it
but if it's a plant virus, I recommend you to plant lemongrass around the plant, it's proven to be effective and I've tried it myself
but as for insects...
maybe I'll try to find a more effective way without using chemicals...
see you again.....
