I was surprised to know that many people have no idea what a well is. Mostly found in villages used for storing drinking water, also used for irrigation. It is called "kua" in hindi. It might have some other names in other languages. It is very ancient method of storing water. The one in picture was built by my great great grandfather. It also have fishes and crabs in it. During rainy season frogs and water snake visit too.Weavers come every year to build their nest on the branches of trees which bend inside the well Have you ever seen a well?if not what methods are used to store water for agricultural purposes in your area?

I see someone already explained about cisterns to you so I won't bother. I was born and raised on a working farm in the middle of the US. We lived well outside of the nearest city, so had to have our own well drilled for fresh water. We also had ponds built on our farm to catch rainwater for the animals we raised to drink. (One of the ponds was an artesian well. The pond went deep enough that it broached the water table so rain wasn't needed to keep that pond filled.) Another part of our farm had a stream running through it. There was a cave in a hillside that let water come out and ran off down our land and many farms used that stream to water their livestock. We really never needed to "store" water for agricultural purposes. We had more than enough for anything we wanted.

@CuriousGab I know rock-cut cisterns. We have them here, too. Just not in my part of the country.

@DaddyEvil "We also had ponds built on our farm to catch rainwater" Farmers here build ponds for the same purpose. We also have one rock-cut water cistern in our village. "There was.......that stream to water their livestock." That's great Natural source of water. If you wonder what a rock-cut cistern is...you can see the picture... in the link below
In the olden times, people knew the importance of water and had devised a number of techniques to manage and conserve water resources. These efforts not only met the drinking water needs of the people, but also helped the survival of livestock and agricult

In the US, that would be called a cistern. For collecting and storing water. A well here is when pipe is drilled into the earth until you reach water. A pump then brings it to the surface. Forgive me if this is dumb but are fish placed in them intentionally?

@CuriousGab That's something different. A well here is for clean drinking water. A pocket of water is tapped 80-100 feet deep and with little treatment, it's safe to drink or to cook or clean with it. Most places have rules about where a well can be put in. If your property is large enough, you can put in your own well. The well drilled near me provides water for the entire neighborhood. It has had state required testing and is safe. A small company owns the water system. They all live in the neighborhood.

@Vikingswest1 Bore water is different from the well you mentioned and it is necessary to test it before using. It's good that you get fresh and pure water and which is tested for safety purposes. As soil structure, climatic conditions, rock type...etc differ according to regions..the water type,it's taste,pH etc changes too.

@Vikingswest1 "are fish placed in them intentionally?" Yeah, fishes keep water clean.they were initially kept by my grandfather because he was fond of them .Later they grew in number..they donot grow much in size..only upto the size of a palm. Many people keep tortoises too "when pipe is drilled....... it to the surface." It is called borewell, right? Nowadays farmers here like to take a borewell as you mentioned rather than the traditional wells..traditional wells take lots of efforts..and space. But bore water is not safe for drinking, bathing, washing veggies etc.as it contains viruses.

I know smaller wells. The first one I saw was one in which you threw a bucket to gather the water. Later on, I saw wells with pumps.

We too use pumps to extract water...it is more convenient, fast and easy Wells are also built in rivers...such as the one above..

@marguicha Such wells in rivers have advantages...as they get plenty of water and rarely gets dry during summers

I know wells, we call it "brønn" in Norwegian. If it's a cistern, the Norwegian word is cisterne. So it seems we've used wells far longer than cisterns, since we just borrowed a word fairly recenty there. Farmers here don't use cisterns or other ways to store water a lot, water is normally no problem. If it's a problem, it used to be that it was too much of it. Wells would have been used for drinking water in many places, 'cause the water is filtered through many layers of rock so it's cleaner than drinking from rivers and fjords. Fjords can also be too salty.

@CuriousGab We have wells too, but just looking out the window tells me why we don't need to store water :-) It's supposed to rain heavily this afternoon, I can see the clouds coming from north-east. We actually have a well at our cabin, but it hasn't been used for the years so I don't think I'd drink the water in it now. We just put a big bucket under the drain from the roof, the water is good for watering flowers if needed, washing things etc, and then we bring water for drinking. It's a lot of moor in this region of Norway, so building wells without too much fuss would be easier higher up in the hills.

@Torunn "brønn" I never heard it before . "water is normally no problem" Water scarcity is major probelm in tropical region and that is why wells are found here. Well water is indeed very fresh, clean and natural. Wells, handpumps, borewells, cisterns are some methods used here.

@Torunn "We have wells too..... store water" That is good...you get good amount of rain the water is good for watering flowers if needed, washing things etc, Even if you don't use it for drinking purpose as water might be not tested for its safety.. as it has been long time since you stopped drinking from it,it is good to use it for other purposes like watering plants.

@CuriousGab I said they are still there in the village but people don't use them or they have dried. With the modernisation people have borewells these days and have submersible pumps installed in most of the houses there

@sjvg1976 We donot have many wells in our village now..we had before but most of them were closed...and now people use hamdpumps or borewells. Some people still carry water from handpump like how it is shown in movies but only difference is they carry it in drums and on a vehicle....time changed...methods changed too

@sjvg1976 Yes,wells are dying.. Wells take up too much space, time and efforts to be built.. so people go for easy and fast way of borewells or pumps. Besides wells have open surface

@FaruMesh My mom's father have a tortoise in their well..they use that water only for irrigation purpose.. While crabs probably come to feed on fishes in the well

@allknowing Fishes don't come on their own...we have to put them in water...for crabs..they came themselves don't know from where Perhaps they came from the lake nearby along with water through a hole..present at bottom of well. My grandfather use to say there is connection between lake and well..

We call it ‘balon’ here although ours look cruder and more ancient than your grandpa’s. I remember a little boy fell in the the village well while fetching water. Luckily neighbors could get him out in time.

@Butterfingers They are found only in villages.. metro cities donot have them.as it takes too much of space and it's mouth is open...so chances of accident are high. In village almost everyone knows swimming ..so that's not a big problem

As time changes we need to change the old ways of living too. They are not as effective as they used to be. Those who have them rarely use it for drinking purpose.

Wells are pretty rare now. Most water system to the houses are provided from the pipeline. Back in the days, wells were pretty common. Even my house had one before. For agricultural, we have drains.

@prinzcy They are becoming rare indeed. Our village have very less number wells left..many are closed ..as it takes too much space and their was drought for couple of years.. Now people mostly use water from hamdpumps, borewells or pipelines.

In my country, making a well is for rural use, but in some houses they are currently doing it to help with the expenses of the clean water service. A deep hole is dug 7 or 9 meters deep. Until a stream of water is obtained and a hydraulic pump is drilled and placed to bring water up to the surface.

Yes,usually well water is use for domestic and agricultural purposes.. But the water needs to be tested before using..do this people test it? It does help with expenses but safety matters too. If the water is of good quality ...to be able to consume then its a good thing.
