WiFi Away From Home

When we go on our trip later this year, I will be bringing my laptop along. I MUST be able to use it on the road since I will be paying bills, etc. My understanding is that when I am at a motel, for example; and they have WiFi, I will be given a password to use. I need to click on the WiFi icon on my task bar, look for the "hot spot" name which will be different from my home base; and put in the password. Is that correct? When I click on the name, it will ask me for a password? Thanks. This is very important; and I thank you for your responses. Photo Credit: Pixabay

@rakski, when I went to Davao for the physical examination for my work visa, I no longer asked password from the hotel where I stayed. It's automatic internet entry, no more asking of password.

The way it works with Hilton properties (which is where I always stay), you log in with your last name and your room number. Other hotel chains give you a password when you check in.

That's typically how it works with public wifi. I usually do that when I go on vacations (for browsing, reading, etc) but for personal transactions I would use my mobile data plan.

Better to avoid your financial transactions when you are on some WiFi outside. It is not considered safe.

I have heard that it's not secure to use your bank transactions on a public WiFi.

that's right, on average all public wifi, are given a password, and you can ask the motel employee for the password,

Yes and you just need to ask for the password from them, if not being provided. Though I don't really like to use this free wifi.

I suggest you should avoid working on such open WiFi connections. Chances of fraud are very high! You can use your mobile network.

That is how it works for us. Sometimes, if there is no wifi available, we have a 'hotspot' on the phone and we can log into that. I think if you do the latter, you need to keep an eye on how much data you're using.
