WiFi Away From Home

When we go on our trip later this year, I will be bringing my laptop along. I MUST be able to use it on the road since I will be paying bills, etc.
My understanding is that when I am at a motel, for example; and they have WiFi, I will be given a password to use. I need to click on the WiFi icon on my task bar, look for the "hot spot" name which will be different from my home base; and put in the password.
Is that correct? When I click on the name, it will ask me for a password?
Thanks. This is very important; and I thank you for your responses.

The way it works with Hilton properties (which is where I always stay), you log in with your last name and your room number. Other hotel chains give you a password when you check in.

That's typically how it works with public wifi. I usually do that when I go on vacations (for browsing, reading, etc) but for personal transactions I would use my mobile data plan.

Better to avoid your financial transactions when you are on some WiFi outside. It is not considered safe.

Yes it will ask for a password. The hotel front desk will give you a password.

Thank you. I'm excited too. Marked our route on all the maps and am making a list of things to see.

I think so, yes, but I've never used Wi-Fi out of the house.

It depends on the hotel or motel, some don't require a password.

I've never had to use a public wifi but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.
