Goodwill

Goodwill sucked me in this morning... I bought several tops and a pair of pants. One top in particular, a top I'd describe as "Female Sailor" was actually a romper. Yep, I thought it was just the top, but brought it home to find that it was not. I do not like trying clothes on at goodwill. I did buy one item today that had clearly been washed (I could smell the fabric softener), but you can not always be sure that items are washed. Anyway, I need to take it back and apparently will only receive store credit. I should be thankful they even do that, I suppose, but it's irritating I won't get my money back. I am glad that I can take it back to any goodwill. I bought this at a goodwill in the next town over, but my closest goodwill is only 2 or 3 miles away. Do you thrift shop?

No, I do not, I have checked one of their stores and I have not the feeling that things are inexpensive there.

The goodwill's vary their price based on area. Ours are expensive! Especially for clothing.

@LadyDuck I grew up in hand me downs so it makes little difference to me.

@ScribbledAdNauseum For house-wear I buy inexpensive clothing but never second hand clothing.

I like to get jeans from thrift stores. My neighborhood store is Savers. I donate too. But since no try on I just window shop. That's the way it is at Savers too.

@oahuwriter There are a lot of very comfortable leggings now. They fit, but aren't tight. The pants like dancers wear are more constricting and I hate the little band around the arch of the foot.

No Savers around here, but I hear so much about them. Goodwill (at least in my area) is having B1G1 off sales on jeans lately. I like leggings more.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Ok. I love baggy and elastic waist jeans. Leggings reminds me of leotards, dancers wear, like ballet dancers wear.

I haven't been to a thrift shop since last year and the lockdown. I don't even know if our little local place is still open. At least Goodwill will take your item back and I'm sure you can use the credit for something else. Are you still buying to resell?

I actually got a cash refund. Online and even on the bottom of the receipt it said it was store credit only. I was glad they gave me the cash back. The cash I got back actually went towards the shipping fee for something I just sold. Yes, I am still selling things. I've had to sell some things to the thrift store and not really get a lot of cash for it. I am being very careful with what I buy to re-sell.

I am fortunate that the two closest are two of the best in the area. I think thrift shopping has become more and more popular lately.

No. I usually buy online and my family either buys online or makes it tailored. It's very common to tailor make it here. But I think I used to wear thrift shop clothes when I was younger.

I grew up on items that first belonged to my siblings or cousins. We also bought clothes from cheaper department stores. I was never taught to sew.

@Anqaya I was the youngest of three, so it would have been my sister more-so who learned to sew. You are right, however, sewing isn't done here either.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Sewing is really out of fashion or society now. Atleast here. And I didn't have any siblings so...

Sometimes, but I don't like Goodwill it is overpriced on most things. I can buy new stuff for less, or I know of another place that has awesome buys, much better than Goodwill. Check out church sales..there is one near here that is open on kind of a semi permanent basis and they have some great stuff. You never know what you will find. If the weather is decent next Weds maybe I will go. I haven't been for awhile.

I hadn't thought of church sales so thank you! I will definitely keep an ear out for those. Here the Goodwill's vary in price. It's cheaper in some areas and not in others. I need to get to Salvation Army, and a few other charity rescues.

@divalounger It's hit or miss for me with yarn. I found some the other day for $3 but am reselling it because it's not something I need or want.

I don't often get the chance to, but I do like thrift shopping. You have to have a keen eye to spot the really great bargains. It's almost like a challenge for me to find those one-of-a-kind deals. They're out there, you just have to know what you're looking for.

@moffittjc Are you a part of "Weird and Wonderful Secondhand Finds that just had to be shared" on facebook? I love that group. Lots of cool things found and not just goodwill's but stores I don't have around me like Savers.

I found a Trader Joe's freezer bag at goodwill for $1 and grabbed it. A Dell brand laptop bag at another goodwill. There's lots of stuff I know I pass by, but some things would be horrendous to ship if it came to that.

Some of my favourite things came from thrift shops. I got a sweater I love at a garage sale last week. Paid $4 and it still had the tags on it.

You should go for jeans. I don't know how long the sale will be but at least in my area of NC, the goodwill's have had buy 1 get 1 on jeans.

I do thrift shop. Often I can find very nice, or even new items. I don't ever try anything on in the thrift stores, as I want to wash them first. I don't often make a sizing mistake, but on the few occasions it has occurred, I just donate the item back. I suppose if it were a pricey item I would ask for credit, but I have never returned anything.

I was able to get my money back at goodwill when I didn't expect it. Yes, I'd rather wash it. Sometimes you can smell that it's been washed, but often times you just can not tell.

@MarieCoyle That makes sense. I bought around $100 worth of clothes from Goodwill a few years ago and it all went into the same load before I even tried to wear it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I am sort of a clean crazy nut, I think....when I buy used clothing, I bring it directly home and it goes in the washer immediately.
