Someone’s Secret Family Recipe

A friend came over for an impromptu dinner at our house about 12 years ago and brought a salad and hot fudge sauce for dessert. We had the ice cream.
Her hot fudge sauce was out of this world, so I asked her for the recipe. She refused to give it to me! Said it was a family recipe. Said she may use it in a cookbook. Said it’s her thing to bring to someone’s house. Oh, well.
Turns out after 12 long years of asking, she finally gave me the recipe. It came with stipulations. No giving the recipe out to anyone ever including my own kids, calling it her recipe, and never bringing it to other homes that I visit.
Well, I made it right in front of my kids. We all had the best hot fudge sundaes in the world with sprinkles, whipped cream, and a cherry on top.
It’s now called Dianne’s Hot Fudge Sauce.

@DianneN I wonder if she raise her own cow, milked it and then made some 'secret butter!'

@snowy22315 The rest of her cooking sucks.
.
Actually, we’ve been great friends for years and years. Unfortunately, she told me that she won’t go out with me and another couple anymore, because she doesn’t travel in our “social” circles. We think she’s losing her mind.

I had a friend who refused to share a "secret recipe" for a very long time. I finally thought that the reason was because she bought "ready made" and had not a clue how it was made. After the Internet arrived in all homes, she shared... fishy!

@DianneN It was an Indian recipe not easy to find on books that we could buy in France or Monte Carlo, but not difficult to find in English on the Internet. I had the doubt when I ordered the same dish in an Indian Restaurant in Monaco and it tasted exactly the same.

Those secret family recipes, what ta heck is that secretive? I'm glad you made the recipe, right in front of your kids! If people can't share a recipe,, what good is it anyway?

The picture looks very yummy. I bet she knew you would reveal the secret recipe in front of your kids so it is not a secret anymore. So will you take the recipe to other homes or just keep it at your home for whoever comes over and wants a hot fudge sundae?

people here sometimes do something similar to not giving the recipe - they give you the recipe BUT they don't mention certain ingredients so you can never make it taste as good as their "thing"

@aureategloom You’re right, but this was my first try at it. It called for a pinch of salt, so perhaps I gave it a larger pinch.
I’m with your mom on that. I never understood why people are so stingy with their recipes.

@DianneN i agree, but still - it gives you space to try and add some ingredients you think that might be good for the recipe, so you can make your own in the end
my mom asked my cousin for cake recipe and she reminded her that she won't list everything, my mom was like: then don't write it at all

Well you didn't actually give the recipe to your kids, they just watched you make it
