Nursing Home Meeting

I had the meeting at my mom's nursing home today. It went fairly well and those in attendance all had the same confusion about the account and what happened so we were all on the same page. Confused! We got Medicaid on the phone and most of the trouble goes back to Fall when they didn't get answers for missing funds from my mom's account in 2018 and 2017. They go back 5 years instead of the 3 years I was told by the nursing home. Those funds all went into her son's pocket and his girlfriends. That is all water under the bridge now as that can't be changed and too late to do anything but elderly abuse also dropped the bucket on the case so I don't think the penalty they gave her would be changed anyway. That leaves us with a bill a little over 12,000 to pay off. I told them that my husband and I are on a fixed income and we do not have the money to pay it. The director asked me what my suggestion was to pay it off. I asked why they couldn't put a lein against her house which I had suggested several times before. He was agreeable to this and the ombudsman also said that is a good guarantee of the funds...just at a later date. Going forward, I just need to pay an extra $100 a month to apply to the debt to get the balance down somewhat. I am okay with the outcome. It could have been better, but it also could have been worse. Photo Credit: Pixabay, Public Domain

Sounds like a good outcome. Too bad you have had all of this drama.

Exactly. I had mentioned the lien to the lady in the office who never relayed that to the administrator. All of this didn't have to happen.

It is horrible to penalize her for funds that were stolen, she could not manager her funds.

Very true. She had left bills unpaid, her phone for one that finally got disconnected but she still wouldn't pay the balance of what she owed. I paid that off after she came to live with me.

@LadyDuck I agree but he hasn't worked since my father passed away in 2010. His girlfriend got him fired for filling our FMLA papers twice, the second time for more time. They only allow so many hours in one year. He was also not helping out at my mom and dad's as the program designates and his vehicle was parked at him house one too many times when they were checking up on him.

@kareng Your brother should be the one obliged to pay those bills.

Why can't they charge your brother and his girlfriend for the funds, it's not like you had any say in the matter.

They wouldn't pay it. They don't pay her any rent and staying in her house. They don't pay the water bill and they don't pay the taxes on the house. They want everything FREE in life.

Consider yourself lucky that everyone was able to sit down in a room and reach a compromise. So often we don't see that anymore in today's world.

The whole situation with her son (I no longer call him my brother) is disgusting.

It's no doubt a relief to have this cleared up even if it didn't go quite as well as you might have hoped.

I still have to get this other deposit re-directed. Although getting the water cut off should help. Still can't get that money out of bank.

That's so unfair! They have no compassion for the elderly or the retired on a fixed income.

@DocAndersen I'm going to see what I need to do to cut the water off at her house today. I'ts 3:30 am and I"m still up so hopefully I don't sleep too long. Our electricity was off for over 6 hours and we had a nap during that time so when it finally came back on at 12:30 we were ready to eat and stay up a bit.

Yes and hopefully I get the other deposit squared away. I tried once before and had two people tell me totally different stories on what to do and the third person told me they don't handle those kind of deposits, the plant does. Can't get anyone on the phone there so my work is cut out for me.
