Old MyLot Cover Discussion

A discussion here over a decade ago still sticks with me. The truth is that many of them stand out in my mind. This discussion was wildly popular and had many responses. I'm curious if the same reactions and responses will be given 15 years later. Is the original experience you had on a trip or a concert or any other big event more rewarding than the memories of that event? You experience things one time but you can relive it thousands of times through your memories. Which is more rewarding, the event or the memories of the event?

Memories for me. I live on hardly anything but memories.

I think that memories are more valuable to me than the event was when I experienced it. I can see why your memories are most important

@CarolDM I have many memories of my grandfather that I will always remember. I have a picture of him and my grandmother and one of my grandmother and her family and also pictures of my grandfather when he was younger. The older pictures of him I do not have but remember him in mind every day.

@Vikingswest1 My grandfather was very important to me and even though I only had him for 14 years I will always remember him and how much he loved me and how much I loved him.

When your going through the event your emotions whatever they are would be most heightened. You would also feel most rewarded during this time. However, when one recalls that moment again, that same emotional satisfaction returns, almost as if it was happening again. I would say both feelings are rewarding to you, but one is in the moment the other a reflection of that moment. There might be a slightly more euphoric reaction the first time around as some details tend to fade over time. How do you feel about the topic and my explanation

You make a good point. Your memory may even smooth out the bad parts over the years too. I feel the same euphoria felt initially can actually bring greater euphoria 50 years later through memories.

It sure will be memories. I have a favourite corner where I reminisce on memories. I have a huge stock of those.

@allknowing My guess is that some will have very short books but others will need several volumes to cover it all.

I sometimes sit on the old swingset in the backyard near the campfire pit. I'll think of the fifteen years that my backyard was the most popular place for my kids and their friends. I can close my eyes and almost hear the laughter and see them playing. I have a large stockpile too

For me it varies widely. I can say "I went to a Yes concert in Chicago!" But the fact is that the music was way too loud and the nuances of their music lost. I have some fond memories that don't work well as a story, but were wonderful while they were happening.

I get that. I have some events that grew greater in the memories than they were initially.

Is it okay to say it's a bit of both? The memories of the event do not have exactly the same amount of emotion as the actual event does. The event has more as it's in the moment.

I don't have rules lol you can say whatever you want. Both the event and the memory of the event are rewarding, you're right. I think back on my childhood memories with such fondness but sure wouldn't want to relive some of them hahah

@Vikingswest1 If I recall attending a certain concert I don't feel the same thrill, excitement, etc. that I did when I was actually there. But recalling the experience does bring some sort of a positive and joyful emotion for sure.

@Vikingswest1 I am not a huge fan of remembering experiences that were not happy ones. Sometimes remembering those can make me feel worse.

The memory of the experience will last you a lifetime. You can look back fondly when you're old and gray. I think more will think of it the way you do. Maybe some older members will find memories more rewarding. Thank you for your thoughts

@snowy22315 I think of a first date where everything went wrong but the memory of that first date is more rewarding than the actual date was.

It was about whether the memory of an event is more rewarding than actually attending the event.

@Vikingswest1 I would say the event is very important because it is happening in the moment but the memories you will have forever and if you have pictures you will always have them to look at. That was interesting that you liked this particular post.

@Hannihar There was a much greater population here at the time this discussion was first posted. It was common to have 30 or 40 responses to most discussions. A good discussion brought 80 to 100 responses. I'm a little surprised that the majority of responders chose memories over the actual event. I didn't expect that.

Me too. I sometimes go through the old schoolwork the kids did over the years. I love reading the journals they both kept every year in elementary school. It's fun reading about my wife and I through their eyes. It always brings floods of memories.

Very good. They both are equally rewarding. I also think, as a person ages, the memory becomes more valuable. An example would be playing games with other kids when we were young was no big deal. Just an everyday event. You didn't necessarily attach any significance at the time. But now when you think back to those times, you recall them with a fondness you didn't have when you created the memory.

@jefferson126 It can be sad but some memories have a way of coming back to you after a book or a specific food or aroma or a walk in a familiar park triggers them years later.

@Vikingswest1 ,yes,i think so,in addition,as we aged,we accumulated more memory.but in the meantime,we would forget some past experiences, personally,i can't recall what happened before i am 10 years old.as time went by,i think i will forget more happened before older age.,it's so sad.

Both are equal. The original experience is always awesome and then to remember it over the years is also awesome. It allows you to think "I did that"

I never saw this until now. Sorry. Another response pointed out that the anticipation of the event added to the value too. I guess that value should be added to the event side.

Memories for me. Remembering what that event meant to me, who was with me, the feelings it gave me. I don't think you understand fully when you are living in the experience at the time like you do when you reflect.
