Schools Closed Due to Heat

Yesterday and today a lot of schools in Ohio are closing due to the heat and humidity. I don't know how I feel about this. I don't want the children to be uncomfortable; but I remember many a day sitting in the classroom in late summer with my head swimming due to the heat. Schools never closed when I went to school because we didn't have air conditioning. How do you feel about this? Photo Credit: Pixabay

i suspect, if we have a snowy winter they will regret that closing. Most of the schools I worked in (and that was 20 years ago when I was a teacher) had air conditioning then!!! so many parents now protest, and sue, it is really hard for schools

Back in the 50s and 60s when I went to K-12, none of the schools were air conditioned. I remember one snow day when I was in elementary school. The snow was up over my knees; and my mother hadn't heard about the school being closed. I was about 3/4 of the way to school when a cop car stopped and took me back home!

here, kids have holidays Jun, July and August, so we don't have such problems. holidays are from the end of December to the middle of January too. sometimes schools and college close because of the low temperatures or too much snow - many kids and students, or even professors can't come to the buliding.

We had air conditioning but I remember days when it was out and the windows were lifted to bring in some hot air. I remember those days very well as there were golden rods growing on the back side of the school and I am allergic to them. I ended up with serious headaches from it all after the sneezing stopped.

I agree with it, no point going to school and suffering all day, can't even concentrate to listen and learn anything

It reminds me of here in Florida where our schools will close in winter time when the temperature gets too cold. Which by Florida terms, means if it gets down into like the 40s or something. lol I agree with you, I don't think schools should be closing unless a students life is in danger. If they're hot, let them have more frequent water breaks. We need to teach kids resiliency and toughness, and stop coddling them all the time.

I agree with you 200%. Kids are coddled these days. They can't even walk to a central pick-up zone and must be picked up and dropped off at their driveways.

@LindaOHio One morning in 1960, our front and back door was drifted shut! NO SCHOOL? No buses could ever drive in that blizzard! There was about two feet of snow on the roads:(

Now I’m finding this odd. I live in a tropical country where it’s hot and humid majority of the year. We never got classes cancelled ever due to that. The only time we get classes cancelled is when they’re a heavy typhoon. My son’s school has air conditioning system but he goes to a private school. Most of the schools don’t have them though.

@LindaOHio I can understand if there’s too much snow coz it’s really difficult to commute and it’s too dangerous. But too much heat? I don’t think that’s a valid reason to cancel classes.

I went to an old fashioned grade school, There were no airconditioners and big huge window the teachers had to open up with hooks and they got the breezes blowing in but school was not cancelled,

@RasmaSandra I wish they would have used the shades. The windows were wide open, no shades and that hot, humid air would fill the classroom.
