Do You Buy Souvenirs When You Go On Vacation?

I know that it has been a long time since any of us were on vacation, but the last one that we were on was just before any of the Covid stuff happened. Did we luck out or what? Anyway, for us, it was the Christmas season. I wanted to see what a Christmas Bazaar actually looked like because they aren't common here so that was where we headed. My souvenirs were tiny Christmas angels which I bought at every bazaar that we visited. Maybe not a really good idea because now they are just more that I'm going to have to pack... and it looks like we are moving again. I will give you details about that in the coming days. Back to souvenirs... do you buy them at all and what kind of souvenirs are you drawn to? What was the last one you bought?

My mom collected tiny cups and saucers and my aunt collected spoons. I would always find them on trips I would take. When I was young, I'd collect soil. I had baby food jars with soil from everywhere I went. I'd write the date and place on each jar. I took trips as a teen too, collecting soil from other states as well as Canada and Mexico. I was moving into my first home with my wife and dropped the box on the walkway to the house. Most of the jars broke and my soil collecting ended that day.

Tiny cups and saucers... that sounds really cute. Never heard of that. I feel bad about your bottles of soil... I never heard of that. Did you ever try to plant a different flower in each jar to see what would happen??

@Hate2Iron No. I wish I had. There is a yard in Robbinsdale, Minnesota that has soil from all around North America. The Alaska cup and saucer is an example of what my mom collected. I think my older sister has them all now.

I might buy a t-shirt once in a while (I did get a “Conch Republic” t-shirt when I was in Key West last year, and I’m wearing the Niagara Falls shirt I bought when I was there a couple of years ago), but the souvenir trinkets (my late aunt collected bells from various places, for instance) aren’t for me. I can’t remember a single souvenir trinket surviving my childhood.

LOL... to the bells. I started collecting them in the early seventies, but stopped at about 15 I think. They are too hard to move and not lose in the process.

I haven't been on vacation in awhile but the last trip was at the ocean. I did bring home a nice souvenir of sea shell wind chimes

Oh, that would have been nice. I think that if we do move to the country, I will treat myself to some new wind chimes.

I tend to collect magnets. I have over 100. They are small, inexpensive and easy to display.

They are easy to find aren't they. I have one from Martinique but never again. I wonder why now. They would have been a nice reminder

Yes, I like to buy souvenirs. I'll usually bring back a keyring or a fridge magnet with a picture of where I've been. The last place we went, the souvenirs I brought back were guide books from the two castles we visited. I don't go out of my way to buy souvenirs now. Perhaps because I've got too many keyrings and fridge magnets! Or maybe because I go away more often, and I always have plenty of photos as keepsakes

@Hate2Iron the only problem with photos is I take so many of them. Of course they're all digital and it would cost me a fortune if ever I wanted to print them all

I'm kind of slowing down now... at least that is what I tell myself lol. Photos are a great idea... might just do that. Never thought of it before...

Depends on where we go. If it’s just within this region, we normally dont coz we often visit the place on vacation. But if we’re visiting another region that we rarely go to or another country, we do bring home something as a souvenir. A shirt, or any Knick knacks that the place is known for.

Just thought of my mom's collection... she had tons of salt and pepper shakers. Watching her pack them up turned me off them lol... The number of sets she had was staggering!

We seldom buy souvenirs on vacation. Are you glad to be moving? My daughter would move every three years if she could, but I hate to move.

I usually try to avoid the mass-marketed, touristy kind of souvenirs, and instead try to find something made by the locals or something that has local flare. A lot of times, I'll buy a pint glass from a local bar or pub, if they have ones with their bar name printed on the glass. I've always collected pint glasses from my widespread travels.

@Hate2Iron I hope you take good care of that old vase. I'm sure it brings back memories from your trip. Is South Dakota the farthest south into the US you have been?

I can't remember. When I look for keep sakes from a vacation I tend to look for local thrift shops. That way whatever I buy will help a local person. But..... Savannah, Georgia I walked into an art gallery and dear hubby said GO for it!! so I bought a pretty piece made by a Georgian artist and we had it shipped to our house. I felt like the Queen but it is a pretty and handmade piece and the man called me to ask if it arrived in good shape. Wow.

I like the idea of thrift shops... that is a great idea. Nice story about the art work. Glad that it made it back to your house without any damage.

@Hate2Iron I have a pretty blue pasta jar for my spaghetti noodles that came from a thrift store on Salt Spring Island, Canada. And a large wooden hand crafted pot that I put potatoes and such in cause I just could not bear to put it outside in the weather- Salt Spring Island, again.

Sometimes I will buy a souvenir if I find something not overpriced and I like it. The last thing I bought was a magnet from Brandywine Battlefield. I've also bought Christmas ornaments when I visited a shopping village in NJ.
