Just a flower

moss rose in a bucket

This is a moss rose. They usually bloom in the middle of the hot summer. It so happens this one is a volunteer where I had them planted last year. They have reseeded themselves. I see a red or pink color on the other plants. My mom used to have these in an absolute abundance in a huge metal vat or planter. I will certainly enjoy them until the weather freezes. We will have a couple of slightly cooler days next week. We know that eventually winter is coming. This bucket does not drain well and sometimes has standing water. I may replant them in a better place.

I had not grown any for years but decided to have some last year, and got the bonus return this year.

I had volunteer moss rose come up in the flowerbed but then the mint Pretty planted there killed them off... I've still got some of the moss rose from last summer in a glass in the kitchen window... When we bring the other plants back inside for the winter I'm thinking I'll plant the moss rose in one of those pots... Moss rose is one of my favorite plants.

They are a very satisfying plant. I do have a whole bed of mint that just barely allows me to have lemon balm with it. I have moved everything else out of that bed.

@GardenGerty Were you aware you can eat moss rose? It's kind of crispy and tastes like watercress to me. She has two different flavors of mint in that bed. We don't want them to cross so have been pulling the runners out and pitching them into the trash. (Something killed the clump she planted beside the house but we don't know what. It looks like it was killed by heat. The ones in the flowerbed see more sun, so we just don't know.)

That is exactly what it is. I wanted to check and make sure I was right before saying that in a discussion.

These are very pretty. Are they a succulent? The leaves look like they are.

Yes, this is portulaca, it is a succulent annual, not really a rose. I have heard that every little bit that breaks off will root and make a plant.

@GardenGerty That's what I know it as - portulaca. I really like them and yes, they are very easy to strike.

I'll look those up, I wouldn't mind having some kind of rose growing around here.

It is actually a little succulant plant. I think it thrives in the heat and it does okay if you forget to water it.
