My Mom almost fell for this scam

It is called the grandparents scam. An elderly person is called and they answer. A voice sounding like their grand child tells them they are in trouble with the law and could you please pay my bail or else I will have to spend two nights in jail. The call is then transferred to a supposed "lawyer" who requests a high amount of money.
My Mom would have gotten scammed if it hadn't been for my sister visiting and caught what was going on. My sister and I have warned her about scammers before but she is getting forgetful and she is way too naive and trusting.
The article below is very interesting.
It says it is happening in my State of Georgia, but I bet it is happening in other States.

I agree. She usually doesn't answer phone numbers she doesn't recognize. I don't know why she answered it.

It's a popular scam that catches a lot of elderly people. It's designed to pull on the heartstrings of a person, reguardless if they have kids or grandkids. And, it usually works.

The mother of a friend of mine fell for this. She rushed to a store to get a money order to send $5K immediately. The clerk saw she was upset and questioned her, then she got the number of my friend at work and called her. They all convinced her it was a scam by calling the grandson at work that she was supposed to be bailing out of jail. I hate scammers.

I had not heard of this scam. I am so sorry they tried to con your Mom..thank goodness your sis was there!
I guess they sure couldnt scam me as I have no relatives to speak of that this would happen to.

@LeaPea2417 Most of the time, all I hear on my answerphone after one of these calls is several seconds of lots of people chatting in the background, but nothing for me. Guess it is a busy call centre

I have never heard of a scam where they would call the elderly. I do know there are lots of scammers that like to set someone alone up and screw them over. It is very sad that people cannot leave you alone but they have to continue till you catch on to what they are doing and try to ignore but they still bother you somehow with something else. It is very sick that there are those out there and this virus has brought the worst out there and their nastiness. It is sad.

I feel that the pandemic has brought out how the nasties really are and that is what is sad. They do not seem to know how to leave people alone and mind their own business. The ones I hate are scam artists that pry on someone that is decent and wants to be nice and they use them and when the person figures out what they are doing and wants nothing to do with them then they have to find ways to bother them and not leave them alone.

Unfortunately yes, it happened to Hawaii residents, then came on news, warning don't fall for it. The victim was suspicious, si they checked, sure enough, it was a scam! Glad, your sister caught it and helped your Mother!

Its a popular one. I was at my moms when she got it one time. They said its your grandson when she asked who it was. So mom asked Billy??? They said yes and she asked Billy who. Of course they said Friend as that is the name that goes with the phone number. But his last name wasnt that

Uh oh! Might be time to get her a cell phone instead of a landline and tell her not to answer unless she recognizes the name on the screen. My cell says "likely spam" for a lot of calls.

She usually doesn't answer numbers she doesn't recognize. I'm not sure why she answered that number.
