No, It’s Not a Bowling Ball!

Our son grew round watermelons this past summer and finally gave us one last week. Being the first day of autumn in our hemisphere, we decided to make time to try it. He wanted to know what we thought of it. It was full of seeds, so hubs and I had a spitting contest in the woods. Not really. lol It was sweet, juicy, and delicious! Really! I’m proud of his gardening abilities. He doesn’t get that from me, although I didn’t do too badly myself growing tomatoes, red and green peppers, jalapeños, habaneros, romaine, basil, parsley, rosemary, and chives. My zucchini didn’t do too well. Did you know that watermelons are not fruit? They are vegetables!

Didn't know this! Just like a tomato is a fruit, not a vegetable!

@DianneN see we do learn something new every day I'm going to ask my grandkids and see if they say a watermelon is a fruit or a veggie

In India we take the water melon to be a fruit and we usually have round watermelons in our country.

Interesting. I’m still calling it a fruit anyway. These round watermelons here are called sugar babies.

@DianneN Yes, because they are very sweet and keeps you cool in summer. I sprinkle a little roasted cumin powder, black pepper and rock salt before eating it to increase the flavor and taste.

There are different varieties. Your father must have a huge garden. What else does he grow besides watermelons and tomatoes?

@nela13 Omg! How wonderful! If we didn’t have critters like deer around, I would love to have a huge garden like that.

@DianneN it is more a farm than a garden that my father has. We have potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, peppers (green, red and yellow), broccoli, cabbage, zucchini, pumpkins, spinach, carrots, beet.......

Fascinating watermelon. I grew watermelons one year and truth? They did not sweeten. I hated to toss what I'd been waiting for all summer so I cut up the flesh and put it in a stew, like any other bland vegetable.

@DianneN I am a hit or miss person for watering consistently. We had a crazy summer this year. July temps in June and July and most of August. Usually 100 degree temps last about a week not a couple of months.
