Fall has arrived, and right on cue, Mr. Raynaud has come to visit. They used to call it Raynaud’s disease, but it’s not a disease, so they changed it to the more accurate Raynaud’s syndrome. Unlike other “syndromes” like IBS, Raynaud’s is more a nuisance than anything else. “Harmless” in the primary version (which is what I have), but a pain. Raynaud’s is a change in body color (usually the fingers) thanks to cold. I’m a party in the winter: give me some iced tea and we can watch my fingers turn white. The primary syndrome has no underlying cause, while secondary Raynaud’s (or Raynaud’s phenomenon) is caused by an underlying condition like rheumatoid arthritis. It was named for a 19th century French physician, Maurice Raynaud. How do you treat it? “Avoid the cold.” Well, duh! My personal treatment of choice is a big cup of hot tea. So, with the cooler weather that has arrived right at the autumnal equinox for a change, the tea mug and caffeine-free mint chocolate tea has been brought out from the summer storage. Ooh, that tea was good. Warmed my hands right up, too. Welcome, Autumn! Mr. Raynaud, you, on the other hand can go to Alaska and bug someone else.

I’ve discovered those “hand warmers” that hunters use to keep their hands warm when they’re out hunting. And those reusable hot/cool packs that you can warm up in the microwave (or freeze in the summer). I’m with you: the older I get and the more the arthritis stabs the more I start looking for a winter home in Florida or Arizona!

@FourWalls Have you ever made "rice packs" that you can heat and apply to your aches and pains. Just plain rice or even beans in an old sock or fabric squares. I have those in lots of places in my house. Very inexpensive. You can freeze those as well. I have a hand that is requesting one this morning.

Hmm... I've never heard of that before. Is it painful? Or just... weird?

It depends on HOW cold the hands get. Mostly just weird. I hold the coffee cup to warm my hands up for a few minutes before taking a drink! And, as I told NJ Chic, I will sit in a hot car without the a/c running or windows down when I first get in it, just to WARM UP, for a minute or so.

@DaddyEvil — it’s easily alleviated with holding something warm. I wish all medical issues were that easy to cure.

In the summer it’s actually rather nice. All I have to do is drink something with ice in it and I’m cooled down when it’s 100 degrees outside. In spring or fall, though, I can get in my hot car and sit with my hands wrapped around the steering wheel (that’s had the sun beating down on it) to warm my hands up.

I knew it was a thing, but I never knew the name for it. Interesting! I just can't stand the cold, as soon as my hands are in pain because of the cold, the heater comes on haha

At an apartment where I previously lived, the heating situation there was less than desirable. My hands would get so cold!! My hands didn't turn white, though. Mr. Arthur Itis does visit my shoulders in winter. He is annoying.

I’ve heard of Raynaud’s Syndrome before. It must be so unpleasant, especially in the winter. Drink up!

I suppose gloves help a little? I found I could wear fingerless gloves and still type. That was a nice discovery.

Gloves are really useless, because the cold is an internal thing instead of external. That’s what makes it so weird.
