Several things lend to the ability cats have of always landing on their feet. First off, they have more vertebrae than humans. This makes it possible for them to move in ways that humans cannot. Also, their inner eat provides your kitty with a keen sense of balance. They automatically position their bodies for a good landing by rotating their upper body to face downward, and their lower body also follows this movement.
All this being true of cats ability but, to achieve this they need about two and a half feet to do so. They can also flatten their bodies as if they were parachutes so that they fall slower.
Cats can still be injured from high falls.
Have you ever experienced a cat falling from a height where you thought sure it would be injured?

@celticeagle The cat recovered. It was not too high, but there was not a "flat" place where he could land. If they land wrong they can get hurt.

Apparently squirrels can flatten themselves into a paraparachute, too.

I had one that was always climbing the antenna tower to the roof. Then would jump down. I think she fell one time and landed wrong. She was blind for a few days.

@celticeagle Figured it out when she ran into me. I kept her in the bedroom for a couple of days and could tell she was starting to see as she started trying to get out. Either had minor swelling or pinched something. It was in the evening after vet hours when I knew something was wrong. The next morning I was sure she would be ok. It was then just waiting to see if she would be a full time house cat.

When I was young I had a huge fight with one of my brothers. He was determined to try an experiment: drop a kitten out a second story window to see if it really would land on its feet. I said NO. Don't you do that. I can't remember if he did it or not.

We always had dogs. Cats have survived some scary falls.
