Our 50th Wedding Anniversary

1971 Wedding in Berkeley
Laguna Woods, California

My husband and I will be celebrating our 50th Wedding Anniversary this weekend and next week! We were married in 1971 in a park in Berkeley, California. I was a 70's flower child, and chose to wear a purple dress and flowers in my hair. My husband was an ambitious young stockbroker. Some of our guests did not believe our marriage would last and were betting we would not stay together. Guess we proved them wrong. We had no wedding vows and made no promises. We had poetry read, drank wine from a crystal glass which we broke, exchanged rings, and ended with the Apache Indian blessing. Just the kind of wedding we wanted. The ceremony was on a bluff, overlooking San Francisco Bay. At the end of the ceremony, two men popped up over the edge of the bluff. They had been practicing rappelling and, when they reached the top of the bluff and heard our ceremony going on, they hung there until our ceremony was over. We invited them to join us for some champagne, lunch, and wedding cake. They fit right in! Over the decades we have traveled together to every state in the U.S., nearly every state of Mexico, most of the Provinces of Canada, as well as Jamaica, the Bahamas, Great Britain, France, Germany and Switzerland. If we've been anywhere else, it has slipped my mind ... which happens a little more these days. We raised four daughters and have eight grandchildren. It's been a grand life! Now, as many of you know, my husband is in very poor health and we see our years together waning, but we are so glad we made it to our 50th. We're spending the next few days at a lovely hotel in Laguna Beach, only five miles from where we live. We intend to relax, look at the ocean, breathe the fresh air, act like beach bums, and enjoy some wonderful meals. If you don't see me here on MyLot for a while, you'll know where I am! The Apache Wedding Blessing Now you will feel no rain. for each of you will be shelter to the other; Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other; Now there is no more loneliness, for each of you will be companion to the other; Now you are two bodies, but there is only one life before you. Go now to your dwelling place to enter in the days of your togetherness, And may your days be good and long upon the earth.

Happy Anniverary Deborah, in a little more than two months we will also celebrate our 50th. We had a classic Catholic wedding in a very cold and very old Church in our native city in Italy. It seems like it happened a "few years ago", but it is half century ago.

@DeborahDiane I looked at the photos of our wedding and counted how many are still alive. Depressing!

@LadyDuck - Yes, it is depressing to see how many people have passed away during our lives. I wonder if our granddaughter will someday look at the photos of her wedding and realize how many people have passed away. None of us are here forever. At least, with photos, people will remember us a little longer.

@LadyDuck - It is amazing how fast a half century can go by. One of our friends, who was at our wedding, even said she remembers our wedding so clearly, it does not even seem to her that it has been 50 years!

@TheHorse - I just looked it up. It is called Cragmont Rock Park and it is located at 960 Regal Road in Berkeley. Someone on the site described it as a "great place to rock climb." It is referred to as a "little park," which is why you might not be familiar with it. It was perfect for our wedding, though. We should drive by there sometime when we are in Northern California. It would be fun to see it 50 years later!

Thanks for the Congratulations. I know it is pretty rare to make it to 50 years of marriage. First of all, you have to both live long enough!
