No More Fines...

At the public library. They did away with them. Books were 25 cents / day and DVDs were $3 / day, if returned late. Even though I've pretty much never returned materials late it's great to not have fines anymore. There's a downside to that, however. If people are no longer charged for late returns, they may not return things on time... Does your public library have fines on borrowed materials if they are returned late?

@lovebuglena It does seem a bit odd... I wonder how they plan to make people return books on time?

@DaddyEvil I just looked at the email and one of the things it says is this: Research shows that fines are not effective in ensuring book returns. How can that be true? I would think it would have the opposite effect. The email also says that they want to make sure that everyone has completely open access to the materials and resources of the public library. I think what used to happen is if a person had late fees on their account and didn't pay them (probably after a certain amount) they coudn't borrow books anymore...?

I think they should otherwise people will return books whenever they want and not when they are actually due.

@lovebuglena It surely would be confusing. I can’t see libraries doing that. They would never know what books would be available.

They do not, as some people did not return at all not to be fined.

Didn't they have to then pay for the books?

@lovebuglena They should, but as it is to expensive to hire lawyers to make them pay, they renounced to sue people.

@LadyDuck I think if you lose a book here and report it lost to the library you have to pay for it. At least that is how I remember it was.

I don't know. Haven't been to the library in a while; and I never returned anything late.
