Well that’s my take on fallen leaves anyway. I’ve been sweeping the paths and the parking area and even the nearby roadsides collecting up the fallen leaves for my garden. I think the neighbours and passers by must think I am super-conscientious or really ‘house-proud’ (not sure if that is the right word in relation to the garden!) to be out there clearing them up already when they haven’t even finished falling yet, but really I am acting from purely selfish motives - I want them for my garden. My vegetable patch - now mostly empty apart from some sprouts and kale and a few root vegetables - is getting thoroughly mulched with a thick ‘duvet’ of leaves layered with grass clippings. My compost bins are all getting filled up with a good mixture of grass clippings, leaves, shredded branches and kitchen waste of fruit and vegetable peelings etc. And in due course, all of this will go to produce plenty of tasty vegetables and fruit for us next year! Have I? I had to re-post as the photo was too big, maybe you just caught it the first time in those few seconds!

I finished yesterday to clear the vegetable patch. The red Japanese maple has shred its leaves, they are bright red, I have to go out and take a photo.

@Fleura I took some photos last week, the colours of Autumn are the best.

@LadyDuck That's true, although I also think we regard them as special because they are fleeting. I'm not sure we would like them so much if the trees were these colours all year round and there was no green.

There are some beautiful colours and colour combinations out there.

It sounds like that should be one very happy veggie patch.

@Fleura Attack of the Giant Squash Plants! sounds sort of like a science fiction movie from the '50s...

@wilsongoddard Honestly it is rather like that - in the middle of summer I look out of the bedroom window each morning and the huge leaves are about a foot closer!

It should do well as long as I can prevent giant squash plants from taking over (again!)

I'd let you come collect the leaves that are falling here but you won't want them. Mostly we have black walnut trees and their leaves will kill plants...

You're right, I'd best avoid those. Thanks for the offer though

That's great that you are making such good use of all the leaves.

I hadn't realised, until we lived right next to a row of huge pine trees, that they also shed their needles in autumn even though they are evergreen. I thought they just shed needles at a low level all year round. But they definitely do shed at this time of year - every time someone comes inside I have to sweep a load of them off the carpet!

@Fleura Yes and you can use those needles for mulch. I use it around some of my flowers to protect them over the winter.

I love that photo. I don't get to see leaves like those, I'm lucky if my mulberry tree has yellow leaves when they fall but usually they're brown when they do fall.

Why let it go to waste, if you have a home for. and it saves having to buy any extras
