Hiccups or Hiccoughs: Have them your way

Yesterday, @moonandstars, wrote about Hiccups During Your Meal and it made me think of people who have suffered from long-term bouts with this annoying problem. I commented about an American named Charles Osborne who had hiccups for 68 years, according to Wikipedia. They say that is about 430 million hiccups. I think I had them for maybe twenty minutes once and it seemed like a very long time. It seems odd too about the word itself. I always figured the hiccoughs was the British way of spelling and maybe pronouncing hiccups. A dictionary I looked at said it hiccoughs is the plural of hiccups. Who knows? Do you get hiccups lot? How do you get rid of them?

Not often, I don't think I have ever had them more than 3 or 4 minutes at a time.

I seldom get them any more. I take a long drink of water and that usually fixes them.

I haven't had hiccups in years and hope not to have them again. They're very annoying.

@JamesHxstatic Yes, it is. I remember talking when I had them and laughing at the way the words came out.

Around us as soon as someone gets hiccups people say " jol khao" ( drink water). Drinking water is the simplest remedy.

Hiccup is a sign of decreased oxygen in the brain. I am not sure if it is effective for you and others. I usually do a deep breathe of air and hold for a few seconds and do it again three times.

I don't. I used to get them at times when I was a child. Rarely in adulthood. But when I did, someone told me once that a spoon of peanut butter would help. It did.

I didn't know hiccoughs was the plural of anything. I have had hiccups but not for long at a time.

Right that plural of hiccups thing made me wonder. Adding an s is so much easier.

@JamesHxstatic It is. I don’t see a need for the word. I had never heard it before.. Apparently it’s not used very much.
