Modus Operandi: Message to Senior Citizens

I got a message from a so-called 'Welfare Officer' that an unclaimed grant is being approved by them, which is related to Covid-19. This is so absurd to indulge in because I am not an elder aged 60 and above. Scammers are trying to victimize innocent elders through SMS on mobile phones. I shared this to be aware of it and not to be a victim. It is obvious that it did not come from one of the local government agencies in the Philippines, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Have you received any messages like this on your mobile phone?

Oh, wow another kind of scam, and if you look at the email address it sounded like a scammer. The sender has not thought about making their message more believable at all.

Yes, it is another way to deceive innocent souls. Speaking of the email address, it does look a scam.

@Shavkat There was a video on fb where a family was targeted by the scammers. Mere answering of the phone or text enables them to get your info.

I agree. It is so impossible for these people to get my mobile number. I assumed they typed the numbers at random. If I am in the mood, I will reply and play along with them. Unfortunately, I am did not register an unlimited text and call.

Not like that, no... I got a phone call today that was supposed to be from a company who wanted to give me a pre-hiring bonus to sign up with them if I just gave them my bank information. Of course, I might have given my information if I'd applied for a job in the last three months. I reported them and blocked them.

That's a certified scam. I also experienced having cold callers a couple of times. If I am in a great mood, I sometimes play along and pretend a moron about it.

@Shavkat Thanks, me too. Tell you what though, I'm experiencing another kind of almost scam. I had a call, saying they're my healthcare. Well, I called my healthcare, in a quirk, because no one answered the number on the recording. I don't answer calls of unfamiliar numbers. Customer service & I talked, she said, not in healthcare system of numbers & be careful for it's a scam.

@oahuwriter I also experienced this, too. There are so many cold callers lately. We still need to be more vigilant.

Uhm, I guess that is a good idea. Unfortunately, sim cards can easily be bought in the market. I doubt if the policemen can track it down. Unless they will conduct an entrapment.

I am not sure how I can tag the causative factor of this. I assumed it is because of poverty, but it is not a valid reason.

@JudyEv At some point, it is also one of the reasons.

@Shavkat I think the causative factor is greed.

This is a good observation. All they want are your account details. So they can deposit your money. But they'll take every dime in your account
