How I became a Mayan astronomer this morning.

It was before my first cup of coffee. I noticed that I was completely blinded by the morning sun coming through my window. I closed the curtains for about 20 minutes until the sun became a non-issue. This happens about four days a year, twice in December, and twice in January. The date is January 10th. As we are approximately 20 days past Winter Solstice, it follows that the same phenomenon should occur about twenty days BEFORE Winter Solstice. That would be the very beginning of December. I'm going jot all this down and see if my prediction is right next late Autumn, assuming I'm still alive and living in the same place. Is this the kind of random observation that led ancient astronomers to chart the position of the sun, planets and stars "back in the day"? I'll attach my best ever sunset photo. I believe it was taken on December 28th, a few years ago. I was on a hike with a friend. The sun was setting directly over our famous Golden Gate Bridge. It follows that the best days for catching the sunset directly over the Golden Gate from that trail would be around December 28 and around December 14. Dang, now I want to visit some Mayan ruins and even Stonehenge.

Can’t really see the trees but the sky is beautiful. Like it’s on fire.

The near side of the trees were dark, as they appear in the photo. We do have some pretty sunsets here.

Hmm... I complained to Pretty this morning that someone had turned the sun up too bright this morning. It was coming through the window over the kitchen sink and almost blinded me. She said she'd make a note of that and tell someone to turn it down a little.

@TheHorse Right now we need a bit more warmth, so she probably shouldn't mess with it right now. Our high today is 44F.

GORGEOUS sunset. You can always listen to “Stonehenge” by Spinal Tap…..
Hilarious scene from a top film. If it can go wrong it will.

What's the difference between inches and feet or meters between friends? Yes, I did watch it yet again just now and laughed out loud as always.

On my gravestone will it read, "Lived a noble life. Was crushed by a dwarf"?

@TheHorse I am guessing a lot was spent staying up at night just watching.

I would like to learn more about how early astronomers gathered inspiration and data.

Cool picture. The sun is always blinding me every morning. My computer is what we call a sun room. My mother is almost through with putting down the new flooring in the den so I can move my computer in there. It will be warmer in the den too.

I have trees to the East that kind of work like Stonehenge. The sun only breaks through and blinds me on certain days of the year. I hope the den space proves to be enjoyable.

That is certainly an amazing sunset. Newgrange in Ireland is a burial mound and the sun shines into the middle of it through a tunnel around the time of the solstice.

I advanced my coffee break in the morning to "beat the sun" and avoid to have it blinding my eyes in the morning. This is a beautiful sunset.

Spectacular picture. And observations. I hope you do write it down and see if you are correct in your assumptions about the sun in Dec/Jan.
