The school photo was produced as a postcard

The photo shows the back and front of my Dad’s school photo which I put up recently. I guess they were printed on card as postcards, so they could be posted off to relatives and/or friends. I have a couple others that have postcard ‘backs’ like this. In small writing at the very top is what looks like ’16 June’ then ’15-6-1930’. Below the printing in larger writing is ‘Taken about October 1927’. Dad was born in 1914 and would have left school at 14 which was the legal age to be allowed to leave school. There is a site ‘Lost Cuballing’ which is where Dad’s family farmed. Someone else on the site has put up a similar photo but with the people in different places and everyone sitting down. The students are all named and the teachers were a married couple.

Things were so different back then, my dad quit school at about the age of 10 or 11.

Kids that age today wouldn't know what hit them if they were sent out to work.

I suppose that is very true. Of course there are those kids who are computer savvy and would find ways to make money online.

It was the norm also in Italy to be allowed to leave school at 14, times have changed.

@Fleura Same as you, it became 16 when I was at school, now it is 18 and it is too late. We will have no more basic workers if we do not change this rule.

Here too, then when I was at school it was 16, now it's 18 which I think is too late for those who don't really enjoy school!

@LadyDuck @Fleura And 18-year-olds who don't want to be at school can be incredibly disruptive. I think the age should be dropped.

It was the norm in those years. Some might have left a year earlier in some cases.

There is another one of the same class but 're-arranged'. I don't know if the back of that is a postcard though.

My grandfather on Mom's side left school at 14, would have been about 1911. He had to help support his mom, whom his dad was divorcing (). Almost unheard of for someone to divorce their wife.

Many had to leave school to help earn an income for their families. Divorce was a shameful thing in those days.

This is very old photo. I think my grandparents are still young this time. 14 is early to leave school

Could you imagine kids nowadays having to go out into the “real world” and work at such a young age?

My grandfather was born on 1917. I don't think there were any cameras in Morocco by then.
