I Was Almost Scammed!

Yesterday I received an email from a friend. She claimed that she had attempted to order a gift card for her niece online but was not successful. She asked if I could purchase a $300 Apple Gift Card and she would reimburse me. The more I corresponded with this person, the more suspicious I became. $300 is a large amount for an Apple Gift Card, the way this person wrote did not sound like my friend, this person claimed that he/she did not have access to a mobile phone. All red flags. I had requested that this person called me. In the meantime, I called my friend but was not able to reach her. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the email address was one that I didn't recognize. I insisted that this person call me; and that's when he/she cut off communication. More red flags. My email account was obviously hacked in order to get my personal address book information. Take heed...these hackers are sneaky! Have you ever been scammed? Photo Credit: Pixabay

No, I haven't been scammed, but people have tried. What I did was I played them! I got an email that said Congratulations! You have been selected to receive a sum of $_____________. We just need your name, phone number, address.....blah blah blah. I asked them if they could send me the money to my PayPal account, but they said no, they'd either send a cheque or put it straight into my bank account but only if it was an American branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland. Then they said I'd need to send them £95 - £105 so that they could release it! (They couldn't make their mind up!) I asked how they wanted me to do that. When they said how I said sorry, I can't do that. Never heard anything from them since! I also keep getting emails saying. Hi there. I'm contacting you because you have the same surname as a friend of mine who has just passed away. He had no-one to leave his money to, so we thought as you have the same surname it could go to you. I just deleted it, I know what's coming next. That's happened at least three times!

Sorry to hear that you get these emails. My Internet Service Provider filters most of that type of email.

I wonder (statistically speakers) what their "sucker rate" is. Even if it's .01%, they still make some bucks.

May be NOT your email account, but the email account of your friend was hacked. I receive this kind of messages as they come from my niece email account, because her account was hacked.

Almost, but I saw through the scammer and didn't respond to him anymore. I put up a jacket on Ebay. I got a response I don't normally get from a potential buyer. They would pay me ten dollars more. They texted me and asked for Game Cards in order to complete the transaction. I became suspicious. Also, eBay let me know that the person was trying to do the transaction out side eBay which is a tell tale sign a scam will occur.

@LindaOHio Very wise of you to see what was going on. They knew they could not scam you. Good for you for figuring how what they were trying to do to you. I have been in person and on the computer and when I learned about the scam in person they did not like it and continue to make me pay for not letting them scam me all the way and think they care when they do not.

Oh wow, that's not good! Can be so tricky. My mom sort of was, saying she had purchased anti-virus software and to call this number to get it refunded and such. I should have known right away it was a scam. They were claiming that she had to send $2000 to get the $200 refunded.

I think it's pretty much a daily thing. Scammers will try anything to get us. I don't fall for any of it. I treat every message, email, text, friend request, etc as a scam until I can verify otherwise.

It's sad that it must be that way. I wish these scammers and hackers would go work for the government and use their "talents" for something good.

This is terrible. Doesn't mean your account was hacked though. They could've gotten your friend's email address from somewhere else. Whenever I get emails that seem not legit I always look at the sender's actual email address since the sender's name they can put anything. That usually confirms if it's spam/scam or not.

I haven't been scammed but they are out in full force. This morning when I checked my emails, I found about 3 or 4 suspicious emails that apparently were from the same source. First of all it looked very spammy to me so I did not open any of them. The subject line had to do with McAffe virus protection and that my device had to be updated or else I won't have virus protection. Of course that is not the case at all.
