A pretty pot of portulacas

My husband and I both like portulacas and our potful of them is beginning to look quite colourful. Most of our plants are doing well although they haven’t been in their positions very long. Now Vince is trying to put reticulation/irrigation to the various troughs and pots so that they will water automatically if we go away for a few days. Mostly we are only away for one night but when the endurance horse rides start again, then we’ll be away a few days at a time. Because omicron is now taking off in our state, the first ride has been cancelled so it might be Easter before we go away again. Today, we’re helping Vince’s brother but I’ll be back later.

@JudyEv You're welcome. Yeah, I love all the different colors together. Portulaca on my porch. Photo is mine.

They are very pretty. I wish we'd got a variety of colours rather than just red. And thanks, we did have fun.

We also both like portulaca. Good idea to keep the plants in pots, it is an invading plant.

At least things can't 'invade' very far here. They would soon run up against brickwork or paving. There isn't a lot of soil available for anything.

@JudyEv - I did not know that the portulaca was so invading. There are several mistakes I make, the worst was to plant the mint in the garden, instead of using a container, it is everywhere now.

@LadyDuck I know mint is shocking at spreading and we have ours in a container.

@judyev Never heard of them but they look great. I'm getting ready to plant my potatoes. I plant them in tubs rather than directly into the ground.

@JudyEv That’s the kind of thing I’m aiming for only in a hessian sack.

I planted potatoes in an old car tyre once. When they were a certain height, I added another tyre and covered them with dirt. They 'set' potatoes at that level then proceeded to grow up above the tyre. In the end I have four tyres and four levels of potatoes.

@xFiacre There is a 'community garden' near us and they are growing potatoes in sacks there.

I would call them a 'cheerful' flower. They always lift my spirits.

Never heard of portulacas, but they look like something even I could manage to grow! With our restrictions being dropped so fast, I am actually thinking of taking a trip into town. There is an exhibition at the British Museum and I've not been there in over two years

When you've been 'restricted' for so long, eventually you really feel the need to get out for a while. Portulacas do well in our heat but they'd probably grow there too. They're very pretty.

I love portulacas too, bright and simple looking and very easy to care for. Your pot looks lovely. Our provincial government is trying to move us out of the restrictions that we have been under, but I wonder about the safety as this virus isn't going anywhere. I just continue to work from home, limit my exposure out and wear my mask and gloves when I am out.

I think you're very wise and we'll be doing much the same. It's just too risky to be spending too much time out and about.
