A surprise in my garden

My garden must have known I’d run out of things to write about so it sprang this surprise on me this morning. As we were leaving to go for a walk, I spotted this beautiful bloom. It’s a canna. I didn’t even know I had a canna! It would have come from one of the places we visited to buy pots and plants. My sister had some lovely cannas in some very pretty colours. Cannas sometimes have variegated leaves which is what this one has. There are ten species in the genus. Their closest relations include the gingers, bananas, heliconias and birds of paradise. Wikipedia says they are used in agriculture as a source of starch for human and animal consumption. I didn’t know that. Although originating in the tropics, the cultivars grow easily in most countries but they need 6-8 hours of sunlight in the summer and might need to be somewhere warm for the winter. Mine will be getting plenty of sunlight at the moment. You can see that the creepers on the wall are getting established too.

Some gardeners don’t like cannas because their tall and bulky but I had them at the back near a wooded area and they stood out well.

They are nice along a fence. My sister had a lovely pale peach one which was very pretty.

@JudyEv Yes, they would be pretty along a fence. I think either roses or irises are my favorite flowers.

Very pretty blossom. I used to have some at the house I rented in the mid 1980s, they were the red ones and had solid green leaves.

Yes, I think so too plus they are fairly hardy given how hot and dry it can get here between May and October.

@JudyEv In a month or so, I hope to post some photos of the volunteer lilies we have along our fence. We still have no idea where they came from, but they have come back every year since they showed up.

Yes, this is a canna lily, the root is edible. This one is pretty.

@JudyEv - I usually ask to a gardener first, I do not dare to make experiments, many roots are toxic. Usually the taste of those edible plants and roots not well known is not at all interesting.

I've never heard of anyone eating the roots. It's surprising how many garden plants are edible. The trick is knowing which ones are and which ones aren't.

@LadyDuck I can believe that. I would be very careful about eating any vegetation unless I was completely sure it was safe.

What a lovely flower, I've never seen a canna before! Beautiful photo and the creepers are lovely, too:) The canna is similar to an iris, except for its vibrant orange color:)

It has a shape like an iris. I think orange or red is the most common colour but there are some others as well. My sister had a lovely peach one.
