I was embarrassed while teaching my kids.

I was teaching them the chapter - "Reproduction in animals". It was embarrassing for me because I had to teach them about the male and female gametes, sex organs, and many things which result in the formation of a fetus. They were listening ro me curiously as if they understood everything but I know they might not have because I could not teach them with heart because of the embarrassment. I wonder how their school teacher taught them the subject. Do you feel embarrassed when you teach your kids such subjects? Picture is from pixabay

I have never understood why this is embarrassing for parents. I know I wouldn't be embarrassed teaching my kids about it but maybe that is because I study medicine and have learnt to have frank and factual discussions about all sorts of things. Like If a kid asked me where babies (human or non) came from I wouldn't be embarrassed explaining.

@sjvg1976 I suppose it is more of a cultural thing.

Maybe you're studying medicine so it's in your profession and you won't be shy if someone asks such a question.

@sjvg1976 My parents were never embarrassed either... There was simply a factual conversation... My dad is a construction worker and mum worked in student admin wonder why they weren't shy.

Teachers are trained to teach the same with embarrassment. In fact there is nothing to get embarrassed on teaching those things. The problem is we, parents are not trained to tackle such things in our life.

No it is just a fact of life and I told my kids the real words for everything and what really happens.

I was never embarrassed talking about this with my sons. It might have been different if I'd had a daughter. I used to get embarrassed when the subject came up during a lesson for my students. Not anymore. If they start to get the giggles - the usual reaction - I tell them to grow up and act like they have some sense.

Yes, it's quite difficult for me to give an understanding of reproduction to young children

I can see how some may feel uncomfortable, but it's still something that we should talk about. At least that's how I feel.

Culturally we didn't had such conversations with our parents. That might cause us to be not so forthcoming on such topics. But I think now we need to perhaps share related knowledge on such subjects. Else Kids would get to know of these topics in their own way sooner or later.

When I was a kid and asked my mother about it . . . her reply was "I will tell you when you get married" . I am less embarrassed with my kids. We've taught them about it "simply" and kept it as a matter of fact kind of thing - part of life. Plus there are videos/books made specifically for kids that make it simpler for adults to explain .

My husband discussed that with my boys. He had a knack for that kind of stuff. I did have to teach my students some of that, but wasn't embarrassed.

I'm sorry you were embarrassed teaching them the subject. I never had the opportunity to teach them about the reproductive system. They sadly learned it in school.

Back in the day some parents did not talk to their kids about the birds and the bees - they had to learn from outside sources.

I was very factual and didn't have any issues explaining it all too my children. I wanted them to know the real facts, not something they would hear from a friend of a friend of a friend. I love children, but I didn't want a pregnant teen or one of my sons to be a father when he wasn't ready. It's always better to explain thoroughly and well. There should be no embarrassment, just truth.

We were taught in school by teachers, it is weird that the parents feel embarrassed. I had no children, but I do not believe I would be embarrassed.

I can understand you feeling uncomfortable but the children need to know these things.

Our parents never explained such things to us. Mostly we found out from our peers. A couple of them had 'the talk' from parents and they would share their knowledge with the rest of us.

It could be embarassing, indeed. But just do it scientifically. Good luck!

Yes I can understand that it is litterly embarrassing. But actually I am from medical background. So, it's little bit easy for me. What's your kids age?
