Giving my mother the pips

When my husband and I first had a telephone, calls were quite expensive. At the time, local calls were limited to 3 minutes or you paid extra. You always thought twice before making unnecessary calls. I’ve been going through my mother’s old diaries. She has documented much of her daily life including any visitors she might have had. Vince and I would visit regularly and these trips are listed in the diaries. On the days we went home there is always an entry ‘got the pips at x o’clock’. What are the pips you might ask? My mother always liked to know we’d got home safely and would want us to ring when we arrived. However, we’d only left her an hour or two earlier so there was really little to talk about for our three minutes. So we devised the pips system. I would dial Mum’s number, let it ring a couple of times then hang up. That was the signal that we were home safely. And it cost us nothing. It worked very well for a number of years. The photo shows Mum and me at a horse event. It was very cold. Mum has Vince’s parka around her shoulders and her crocheted knee rug. She would have been 94 or 95 when this was taken.

Your mum lived a long life too then? My mom was 92 when she passed, how old was your mum? I can tell the temps must be cold that day you both look a bit bundled up

There was a cold wind that day. Mum had a hip replacement at 99 and lived to 104. She didn't get dementia thankfully but the last year wasn't really the best of times.

@JudyEv my aunt, my mind sister had a hip replaced at around 91 and also lived to be 104. Her last few years she did have something like dementia but did well up to then.

@MarshaMusselman The hip replacement stopped the pain she was having which was a huge plus.

I'm glad you like the photo. It seems quite a few others here use pips as well. It saves money and time but you have to remember to actually do it or the person waiting gets anxious.

What an excellent idea! I am sure children today would be baffled that you had to pay extra for phone calls.

I saw a YouTube clip of teenagers trying to work out how a rotary phone worked. They had no idea and had never seen one before.

I think most of us past a certain age have used that particular trick for various reasons. I still find it amazing that I can call anywhere in North America without incurring charges. My first cell phone charged me for receiving international calls so anytime family called me the phone companies got double.

With all the WhatsApp and everything else that is available, we spend an hour or more playing games and talking with our sons in Ireland or Melbourne and it's like it's not costing us anything at all. So different to the old days.

@JudyEv There are many downsides to modern technology. But being able to stay in touch with family and friends that are an ocean away is definitely a plus!

Vince wore pink? You definitely look like your mother. The signal we used was making a collect call for the person calling. Of course, we wouldn't accept it because they weren't there.

The parka was once much brighter. It was the only one in his size when we needed it up in the backblocks of Thailand. It has served him, and others, very well and he still has it.

Here in America, Pips are Gladys Knight’s dancing backing group. My mom and I had that signal, too, when I was in the Navy. We had a set time that I’d call, let the phone ring once, then hang up. She’d know everything was okay with me.

I remember people used to do that when they were away at university and had to call their parents to let them know that they made it home safely. They would do the same thing, let it ring a set number of times and then hang up. I think that you got your dimples from you mother, she looks like she has them.

@judyev during our violent years when we lived in the heart of things my aunt always gave us the pips when she returned from a visit so as not to be charged. We thought it unnecessary and she soon stopped when we persisted in answering her calls.

We were always at least a two-hour drive away and it gave her peace of mind. It seemed a good idea to us really. If you'd hit a roo on some of the roads, there mightn't be anyone come by for quite some time.

Omg she’s so cute. My mom too would ask us to call her (or message her) when we get home after visiting her or something. With technology now, it is way easier to do but still lots of children don’t call their parents home

That is what we also used to do when the call rates were high in the past. My wife still calls back to her mom when we come back to our home after visiting her.

The pips system was a great idea. Did you ever have a party line? I remember visiting my aunt when she had one and I never got the hang of knowing her ring. Finally, I was banished from answering the phone.

We didn't have a party line but many of our farmer friends did. There are some great stories about party lines and people eavesdropping.
