Getting Out Before The Trouble Starts

United States
February 28, 2022 6:08pm CST
When people visit or go to school in places where danger and or conflict start to become a concern, why do they remain in that place? When the withdrawal of Afghanistan was announced and people were warned to leave, many people stayed, dismissing the warnings. Russia has been threatening Ukraine for months yet foreigners chose to stay. In both cases, people were trapped because they dismissed the warnings. Then lives of others had to be risked to save them. Should money and lives be risked to save those that chose to stay, despite being told to leave?

I believe in risking it for those caught by surprise, but if they were told to evacuate, they are on their own if they chose to say.

@Vikingswest1 And the ones you mentioned in the post knew. In both places.

@wolfgirl569 Yes, they did. They had several months to evacuate after the initial warnings.

Many do not even have enough money to buy their bread, how do you think they can leave? Many are leaving the country, 4 days in line waiting to cross the border with Romania after 15 hours travel. Many of them are left without gas to continue their travel. Foreigners with money who stay are idiots, that is a different matter.

@Vikingswest1 - I agree with you about the foreigners, they are total idiots, they asked you to evacuate, do it! I pity those poor Ukrainians trapped there.

@LadyDuck I have nothing but sympathy for those that are stuck in their homeland when trouble starts. They are worth the risk to save them if at all possible.

I am speaking only of the foreigners there visiting or going to school. Those people trapped in their own country have it hard. There is no where to go.

I also felt the exact way you wrote. It's sad that people don't care for things and get stuck at the end like many students stuck in Ukraine and special efforts are being made to take them out from there. The special operation was started in India to take out those students. Our prime minister declared that now no Indian is there in Ukraine. I read the report that one Indian student is killed in the war, no further details are known now.

I hope your government was successful in rescuing every student there. Ideally, this should have been done a month ago. Before the trouble started. India is in a political bind now. They can't support any action against Russia and they can't support Russia. They have chosen to abstain from voting on sanctions. I understand why they are conflicted but I'm a bit disappointed.

@Vikingswest1 we cannot vote against Russia as we have had good terms with Russia for many years and also we cannot go against the US as we have good business terms with them. We are in a difficult situation at present.

@sjvg1976 I know. A tough spot. I'm more disappointed with the lack of a backbone by Biden. He sat and did nothing during the buildup prior to the invasion.

If they were warned and decided to stay anyway, then they're on their own, in my opinion.

Although I'll feel bad if harm comes to them, they had their chance and chose to stay. It's on them.

@DaddyEvil Same here. I would go in myself if I could, to save someone trapped.

@Vikingswest1 I totally agree... If they hadn't been warned or didn't have enough time to get out, then I'd say it's worth the expense of going in after them but those are the only reasons I'd say that.

Many Filipinos chose to stay in Ukraine despite what’s happening because they said they’d be jobless in the Philippines if they ever come back

I pray that they will find safe shelter and no harm will come to them. It must have been a difficult decision for those people. I don't know if it was a wise choice to stay but I hope they stay safe.

Noah warned the world for years, God was planning to flood the entire earth! Who listened to this warning? Noah, his wife, three sons and their wives. All the other people on earth perished!

@kobesbuddy So true. With the media publishing fake and manufactured news, it's hard to know what to believe or who to listen to. What a mess.

Now that is a loaded question!! I think that they should leave if told to evacuate. God gave us common sense for that reason. So my answer would have to be no risking other's lives to save those that chose to stay when told to get out. We have the same thing happening here with hurricanes and evacuation orders for people along the coast. Many stay!

@Vikingswest1 Yes, agree with that part also of not asking for help if staying! I guess I left that part out... It does!!

People are free to make the choice to stay but I believe they should not ask for help after the trouble starts. I like loaded questions lol No matter what the response is, it opens up several questions

If the students and visitors stay after a warning to evacuate, they should be on their own. No resources should be lost trying to rescue them.

It's sad. But I understand why they would want to stay. That is their home. Yes, they could leave, but there is no guarantee how far they could get to and if they are safe wherever they get to.

If they live in trouble zones, they have no where to go. I'm talking about visitors or students that choose to stay despite warnings to leave.

I guess, being human, some of them keep hoping the trouble will blow over.

I suppose many think it will blow over but when they dismiss warnings to leave, I think they are on their own and no resources should be risked to try and save them after the trouble starts.

It IS sad but those that choose to stay in an area despite warnings to leave are on their own. They shouldn't ask for help after the trouble starts.

I would never want to be in the position to pick and choose who gets rescued. And yes, if the visitor, students, etc were warned to get out, they should have heeded the warning.

My thoughts too. They should have listened to warnings and left while they had the chance.

I am hesitant to judge too harshly. I imagine there are some valid reasons for not having gotten out.

I think if you're a tourist just visiting short term, totally, yes, get out. That's on you. It's a little different for students I think. When you're a student (particularly looking at the number of African students in Ukraine who went there because it was their shot at getting out of bad situations in their own home countries), you're in your dorm and living among the people of that country for months at a time. You're on campus for longer stretches of time than you're at home. I can see how they could fall in love with the country of their education to the point where they do consider that to be their new home, where they intend to make it their home. I can see them wanting to stay and support or fight for that country. Or possibly if they were from a poorer nation or used all their money just to get to that country to get to that school, they may not have the funds to make it back home.

That's a possibility for many, I'm sure. I feel for those people. I would think that the governments in those places would step and offer assistance. But then again, those Nations may not be able to help financially. There was a group of students from the US caught in Afghanistan after the withdrawal. I can't imagine why they were even there after the warnings to leave.

@Vikingswest1 Yeah that one I don't know. Maybe they didn't think it would wind up being as bad as it was. US is usually pretty good about getting their citizens out of battle zones before things get too heavy.
