Why is that?

It seems that certain products are only available in stores when there is a special holiday.
Pannettone around Christmas time, Irish soda bread around St. Patrick's Day, fresh cranberries around Thanksgiving, etc.
Why is that?
And how do we get these things during other parts of the year?
My mom asked me to make her fresh cranberry sauce but I've not seen cranberries in the supermarket.
Can't make it without them.
And I wouldn't mind some pannettone.

I suppose if we were able to get everything all year round, these items wouldn't be so special. And some fresh things are only seasonally grown anyway. I wouldn't know where to get fresh cranberries right now . . . I don't even know if there is such a thing as frozen cranberries. Do dried cranberries work (I know that exists)?

@DaddyEvil I see the dried cranberries everywhere now, but I rarely buy frozen fruits, so I don't even know what all is there. And the fresh is everywhere in the fall - especially around Thanksgiving. Maybe that's when the canned ones are harvested too

Both frozen and dried cranberries are available year round but yes, their harvest season is from September through the end of October.

Some products are produced on special occasions because they sell more those times. Most products are sold on Christmas time because it is the season where most people go out of their way to celebrate and spend.

I wonder if fresh cranberries are sold online anywhere.

@lovebuglena I haven't checked online if fresh fruits are available. Last year cranberries here didn't bear much fruit.

Marketing. Mostly. Some stores sell things only when they would be in the most demand. As for cranbaries, themselves, they only grow during certian times of the year, I would assume.

Fresh cranberries are sold from September through October because that's their harvest season.
The other things you're asking about are considered "seasonal" foods, so they're made and sold during that season.
I guess you could learn to make those two types of bread if you want them other times of the year.

@lovebuglena Yes, that's true enough. Cranberries can be sold past their harvest time but not by more than a couple of months. Most fruit can be sold for a short time past their harvest time.

@DaddyEvil I wonder why strawberries, blueberries, etc. are sold here all year around, even though they are also seasonal. And if they can be why can't cranberries?

Cranberries are definitely sold past October as they are in stores around Thanksgiving and I think even Christmas.

It's all a case of demand for the product. Demand is low for these items except at holiday times, etc. You can probably find fresh cranberries online along with the other things you are looking for.

I thought about looking for them online but I doubt they'll be there. Or they will be there at ridiculously high prices.

That must be the case. But other berries are in stores all year round and aren't they also seasonal? Guess their availability depends on where the stores are getting them from.

@lovebuglena I like blueberry muffins, I buy frozen blueberries to make them, you cannot make the difference with those made using fresh (EXPENSIVE) blueberries.

I have not seen frozen cranberries in stores. But then again, I've never really looked for them. I tend not to buy frozen berries of any kind. Though I've used frozen berries when my mom got me some.

Malu has hit the nail on the head. Watermelon used to be a summer treat but now we can buy it all year round and it's hardly special at all.

We seem to be able to buy it year round, however, the quality is not that great when they are not in season.

We only ever had mushrooms too after the first rains when we'd go and pick them in the paddocks. Another seasonal treat.
