Up On the Roof

Roof estimate day. Today was a day I wasn’t exactly looking forward to. Instead, it turned into a fabulous blessing for me. The roofing company employee was prompt. In fact, he was early. He hopped up on the roof (okay, he used his ladder) and inspected it thoroughly. I heard some pinging and hammering along with his footsteps. Gee, how much did the credit union say I could get as a home equity loan for this job? He came down after a few minutes. “What kind of shingles are those?” he asked. “Owens-Corning?” Yeah, they are the industry standard in shingles as far as I’m concerned. “They’re fine,” he continued. “Your leak was caused by a nail being in the wrong place. I fixed that. “Also, your vents needed a realignment in a couple of places.” “So you’re saying,” I said cautiously, still hearing my house laughing at me for thinking I was going to get to keep some of my social security money, “I don’t need a roof replaced, I just need it repaired?” “You don’t even need repairs,” he said. “The few things that were sticking up, I put back.” Since he was here…. “Well, would you like a hundred dollars? Would you take that old satellite dish down?” Just in time for big junk trash day next Friday. Since his company (HKC Roofing and Construction, I’ll gladly spread their name all over the place) also does siding, I asked him to inspect that. “It’s kinda old,” he said. “It was on the house when I bought it, 33 years ago,” I replied. “I’ve never replaced it.” There was one place where the siding had come loose from the window connection (probably caused by the window replacement). He fixed that. So, instead of an $11,000 job on the house, I paid $100. And we had prayer before he left. I thanked God for an honest company and a good worker. What a blessed day I had!! An appropriate classic tune:

Wow this is wonderful news for you! You ned to celebrate. Thank goodness you had an honest repairman. Oh my gosh, that song takes me back to my cousin. She listened to the Drifters all the time. She had her Dad's album collection. I remember many of their songs. Too cool. What a memory.

That happens every so often; and you already thanked God but thank your lucky stars!!! I'm so happy for you. $11,000 is really expensive for a new roof. We paid $4,900 for getting 3/4 of the roof done.

I was thinking high for a metal roof and maybe new gutters with it. Thankfully, I needed neither.

I’ve had my share of shysters before. That’s why I wasn’t looking forward to it (and had another estimate appointment lined up). I promptly canceled the other appointment as soon as the roofer left.

You know, there’s part of me that thinks back to a comedy routine by my late, lamented friend Tim Wilson (he’d talk about construction people not being able to work, and claiming, “We’re covered up, we’ve got all we can do!” “Yeah, you’re covered up in Taco Bell wrappers!” ) that makes me wonder if they are so short of manpower and supplies (as is the case in much of America), they aren’t going to try to go the “one hail ding in your shingle! You need an entire new roof!” tactic. In other words, the labor and supply shortages are “forcing” them to be honest. Whatever. I’ll thank God and count my blessings!!

@FourWalls The shortages are so bad here you're battling to even get a quote sometimes.

Like I said to Judy, they may be short of material and people to do the work so they have no choice but to be honest. I’m just being cynical. It was a true blessing, and they hopefully realize by NOT having as a customer right now through their honesty they DO have me as a customer next time I need something!

We once had an estimate done for a reroof. The roofer said he saw hail damage and suggested we contact our insurance company. Insurance paid for the new roof. God is good!
