Hubby turns 40 tomorrow

Hubby turns 40 tomorrow. We are from Eastern Europe (he is from Ukraine, I am from Belarus) and there men do not celebrate turning 40. I don't understand why. I asked my mom about it and she doesn't know the answer either. Perhaps it is a superstition. We are not throwing a big party but will go out with our parents and his brother Thursday to a local Japanese spot near our house. Maybe his 1st cousin will join us. I see nothing wrong with celebrating out. He deserves a nice time out with family. I was thinking of maybe making a special dinner at home tomorrow for us but not sure what to make. Maybe I will just order takeout.

Happy Birthday! I'm turning 40 too this March 17. I don't feel that old. They say life begins at 40

Thank you! I wonder if he feels older or if he still feels 39.

That's good. Respect their habits and don't go to their 40th birthday, It's also good to have a simple dinner with your family

I hope he enjoys his birthday celebration with family. People here aren't always thrilled to turn 40. It marks the half-way point in our lifespan. Maybe it's something like that where he comes from? (I've always just told anyone that asks that I'm 21. )

Why half-way point? I’d call it less than half.

Some 'big' birthdays are celebrated here but so are lots of 'small' ones. I guess turning 50 is one of the bigger ones.

It’s okay to celebrate any milestone but 40 and only for men. It’s okay for a woman to celebrate turning 40.

I've heard that people's lives or something are starting at 40. I'm not sure whether it is this cause or what. Maybe something else.

Happy birthday to your husband What superstition is related to not celebrating the 40th birthday?

I have no idea. Maybe it’s not necessarily a superstition.

Happy birthday to your husband! Do either of you have relatives in Ukraine or Belarus? If so, I pray they're safe.

Nope. Everyone left those countries many years ago.

Happy Birthday wishes for your husband. That sounds like a good simple celebration. I would always prefer a small celebration with my friends and family than a big celebration. Hope your known ones are safe in Ukraine and Belarus. It's heartbreaking to see the images from the war. It's a big crisis for humanity.

As far as I know there are no family or friends left in either country. Everyone moved away from there a long time ago.

@arunima25 Definitely, a good thing that people moved from there to the US.

@lovebuglena Oh! I see. It must be a big relief. It's a big humanitarian crisis going on there. Keeping them in thoughts and prayers.
