Flower Top Ten: Sunflower (#9)

Well hecky dern I’m late! It was a night of rabbit holes and a morning of watching tornado warnings out of Mississippi. So I’m up now, having lunch and watching tornado warnings out of southern Alabama.
April showers bring May flowers (and Mayflowers bring pilgrims
), and here’s another song with “flower” in the title.
#9: Sunflower - Glen Campbell
In the teaser I said there’s be no “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers,” but that didn’t mean there’d be no Neil Diamond. From the “surprise” department, for the second day in a row, will you look at who wrote this song! We go from a hit that was written by a man with his own string of hits (yesterday’s tune, written by John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas) to another hit that was written by a man with his own string of hits!
In this case, the great Neil Diamond (who’s already had his own countdown) penned this tune that Glen Campbell had a pretty good-sized hit with. It was top five country and #1 easy listening. It also made the top 40 in the pop charts, although it didn’t do nearly as well as the single before it (“Southern Nights”).
And, in another case of songwriters who recorded their own song after it had been a hit for someone else (hmm, sounds like a future countdown to me….
), Diamond’s rendition of his own song didn’t see the light of day until a 50th anniversary box set in the 2010s!
So Neil did bring us flowers, just not the ones you were probably thinking of.
Sunflower
Written by Neil Diamond
Recorded by Glen Campbell
From Southern Nights, 1977
If there’s a chance that romance will find you:

Except for that time he was dating Tanya Tucker.

@LindaOHio — I was miserable yesterday, so I put a hot pack on my face and took some Tylenol. I’m better today, thank God. Thanks.

It's been raining off and on all day but the temp has gotten nice outside. I woke up a few minutes ago and checked outside. Light sprinkles but 72F. It looks nasty but feels nice. No tornadoes here.

@FourWalls I just saw that. It's up near the top of Missouri. And I live almost at the bottom of Missouri.

Upbeat song but I prefer Glen's "Southern Nights" better. But those sunflowers are an awesome plant!

“Southern Nights” is 100% classic, and it really is tough to top. Even with Neil Diamond writing the song!

@FourWalls Neil was a talented songwriter. From Glenn recording his tune to the Monkees also using one. Yes, "I'm a Believer" in HIs Songwriting ability

As with a lot of things, the radio was probably still too busy playing “Southern Nights” to notice there was a new single out.

You probably don’t. By the way, I’ll have a discussion on Thursday, God willing, that might interest you.

Neil Diamond is super talented. Always liked this one.
BTW, thanks for not including You Don't Bring Me Flowers, it brings back some memories of Brenda (mother) who would be drunk/stoned and go to the piano and sing it at the top of her lungs at 3 AM.

Oh, you’re welcomed. Never cared for that song. That was the start of Diamond’s “smarmy” period, which I’d just as soon forget that he ever had.
