School Days

When I started first grade we lived on a street with lots of children. One close neighbor had two boys older than me. The were given the responsibility of seeing me safely to school. They were at the upper end of the street so they stopped by for me and as we went down the street other children joined us. We walked at least a mile and by the time we got to school there were probably at least fifteen of us. Older and younger children. It was a back street and we took up the whole road. Drivers were careful to watch out for us. We had some mean boys that walked with us that were troublesome. I’ll tell you more about them in another discussion. I’d like to read about your school days. Teachers, events, anything you’d care to write.

I almost always road the bus to school, but ocassionally I road my bike to school when the weather was nice, at least in ES. The junior high and HS were further away.

It is good that you were so many, you surely were safer and the car could spot the group immediately.

We had fun walking with playmates. I think it was the highlight of our day other than the mean boys.

I went to a private school that was pretty far away from where I lived, so we had a bus pick us up. It was about an hour ride on the school bus, which meant we left for school before all the other kids and returned home from school after all the other kids. I hated that I couldn’t see all my neighborhood friends at school since they all went to public school. But slowly over the years, more and more of my neighborhood friends started going to the private school since the public elementary school had a reputation for being a bad school.

@RubyHawk Because we had such a long bus ride, I always did my homework on the bus on the way home from school in the afternoon, so that when I got home I could go out and play with my friends. And the long bus ride in the mornings was the perfect opportunity for me to do some quick cramming on test days!

You must write a discussion about your school days. I only walked the first year . After tha I rode the school bus and as you did, I rode the first bus in the morning and the last one in the afternoon. It made for a long day for a child. We had no private schools in our small town.

@RubyHawk when I was 10 yrs I walked with Betty ann and we had a girl Edna moved there new that year that liked a boy who liked me, Dale. He was nice but I wasn't interested other then friends for boys. but she got mad and started an actual hitting fight with me. We ended up both in trouble with parents. Funny thing is, we ended up being best friends after that.

@bunnybon7 That can happen. Girls get jealous and get over it. I had a few best friends all through school but lost touch with them long ago.

So there was no School bus system? Our school was at least 15-16 Km. away and we had to use a school bus. Some older as well as younger ones were nuisance creators yet we had some older students who dealt well with them. I enjoyed reading this discussion!

I cycled to school from grade 4. I had some very troublesome classmates who tried to bully me and I reacted too. Moreover I was a good student with lots of other good qualities so these students were jealous and tried to hurt me. My teachers loved me a lot. I had only one good friend who is still in contact with me.

lol. I absolutely hated school and everything about it. Nothing pleased me more than the day I graduated. In fact, a semester early. I remember getting called into the principal's office and he sat me down and explained I had more credits than needed to graduate and so I would be done in January instead of May, to attend the ceremony in May. "Are you sure," I asked. "Yes," the principal said, "We are VERY sure." lol

@RubyHawk I was pretty amazed by it myself. It was not even like I was the type of student who ever really hunkered down in class. I actually personally felt that most of my high school years were a complete waste of time. But of course I had to do it. I never went to college because I was pretty much done with "learning" and was ready to get on with things. I became heavily involved in the stock market, then got into real estate, then into some private equity and other things, and the rest is history.

How I miss the times when kids could walk to school safely - drivers aren't as careful these days. Kids used to look out for each other too - how neat you had a big group to walk with!

I had 3 brothers, 1 of which was older then I was, but I was always told to watch out for them, not them for me. You are lucky that others looked after you instead. Some of the kids from the other schools were loud and talked roughly on the bus, I remember my older brother's friends coming to my rescue a couple of times.
