Mother - In- Law Tongue

Do you recognize this plant? It is called mother- in- law tongue or snake plant. It's scientific name is dracaena trifasciata. Intrigued by the name l did some research and learned that the pointed tips of the leaves symbolizes the sharp tongue of the mother-in-law- hence the name. Now, you see it in movies, you read about it in novels, it happens in real life - mothers -in-law at odds with their daughters - in- law. Mothers- in -law are thought to be fearsome creatures., but why is that ? ' and what about fathers-in-law? - we don't hear much about them. The only gripe l had with my mother- in law is that l rather wish she had advised me against marrying her son - not that l would have listened anyway. Have you experienced any mother- in - law problems ? Are you one of the good ones? Note: The mother-in-law tongue plant is usually kept indoors where it is a great air purifier, able to absorb toxins. Image by pixabay.

Of course some mothers -in- law do not believe that anyone is good enough for their son or daughter, so they act not very nice to the person he or she may choose..

I just knew this plant by the name snake plant, and didn't know it's also called mother-in-law tongue. I am glad my mother-in-law is east to get along with, hence I don't really have any issued with her so far. Except that she might not agree with some of the ways I bring up my children, but she still respects me and doesn't interfere my life which is good.

@Kandae11 Yes, understanding the differences and respect them are important. Though I don't agree with some of my mother-in-law's ways of bringing up children, I understand her concerns and I always explain to her why I choose that way, so that she doesn't feel worried. After all, she loves us and the grandchildren.

Mom had those plants, I never liked. I loved my mother-in-law and she was very kind to me. I am sure I received more compliments from her than from my own mother. I am not a mother in law, we had no children.

@Kandae11 - I know that some are not at all nice. My mother was not a nice mother in law for the wife of my brother, this is a fact and I cannot deny this just because she was my mother.

@LadyDuck Sorry about that, but as you say, it is a fact - some are nice and others not nice. There has to be a reason why that name was added to the plant's other names.

I only knew this plant as a snake plant but it's interesting that it's also know as mother-in-law tongue. I could tell you stories about how sharp my mother-in-laws tongue could be and she certainly lived up to all the stories that mothers -in-law are known for The one thing I learned from my mother in law was all the things not to say or do and I have a good relationship with my daughter in law and my son in law,

I would call this plant sharp tongue. I can understand how mother in laws can bite. My grandmother has such a tongue and has stabbed me more times than I can count. I try to smile politely and keep the distance without showing that I'm keeping the distance. I say I have to work and things like that. She catches you off guard many times

I suspect she is a veteran at catching people offguard. You may try your best to be alert and aware of possibilities but being human you will sometimes fall for the bait.

I am sure this name is quite different here. Is it true that this plant is called mother-in-law in your side? I am lucky that I have no problem with my mother-in-law. I treat her well and so does her. This is a good cycle.

Mom always had those as houseplants while I was growing up. I have no clue who took them when she passed away. I never met either one of my mother-in-laws while I was married. My first wife didn't like her mom and my second wife was always on the phone with her mom but never suggested going to see her.

I have a snake plant. I did have mother in law problems when I first married. Mainly because she lived with us. I try to stay away from my daughters in law unless invited. They tell me I’m the perfect mother in law.
