A horse rescued from a ditch in Virginia

Thanks to a person who showed concern for the welfare of a horse that was laying on his side in a ditch on a road in Virginia Beach 16 days ago, firefighters from the area responded to the request to rescue the animal that surely would have perished if no one come to rescue the poor horse.
The Virginia Beach firefighters used shovels to soften the edges of the ditch so that a veterinarian could sedate the horse so he could grab the legs of the horse and get to solid ground.
The good news is that the veterinarians determined that the horse is in good health after the effects of the sedative wore off and the horse was on his feet once again.
The question is how did the horse fall into the ditch in the first place? I did not think that the horse fell into the ditch on purpose. Maybe an accidental fall.

Accidents happen. Maybe he was trying to cross the ditch and fell.

That is what I am thinking since the horse probably could not see where he was walking in the darkness.

Most likely since it could have been dark on the road at the time of the accident.

Good news the horse was rescued but even better news that he's okay. It is bewildering as to how the horse fell in the ditch,

Most likely the horse fell into the ditch due to darkness in the road.

That what I am thinking that the horse fell into the ditch by accident since the horse could have walking in darkness.
