Do you remember when we had rotary dial phones? I was a long-distance telephone operator back in the mid-'70s and early '80s. I made person-to-person phone calls and announced collect calls. We figured the time on long-distance calls for hotel stayers. We also figured long-distance coin calls from phone booths. Remember those? The operator would come in on the call every few minutes to tell you what you owed for the next few minutes. We had to count the coins as they went on the phone. Each coin made a different tone. Nickles, dimes, and quarters. Did you have a party line? We did have one on my grandmother's phone. I knew the family that was on it They lived about two blocks away from us.
Those were the days.
I first started working at Mountain Bell, which was partially computerized called Mecobs then, after the divestiture, it became AT&T and was completely computerized. We went through two weeks of training. No longer did we count coins out by hand and do it all manually.

@celticeagle The one my mother had in Italy was property of the phone company, the one we had in Monte Carlo was personal property and we still have it.

We had a party line for a while... not sure when we got a private line, nor what our 'ring' was for the party line, either. But then, I wasn't allowed to answer the phone until I was 12.

@celticeagle Maybe, or maybe there was a service upgrade, along about the same time we got natural gas and sewers on our street. I don't remember what year that was, but I was already attending school for a few years... maybe 1960 or so.

@BarBaraPrz ......Maybe so. Could depend on where you lived too. Rural, suburbs, etc.

I think you had to pay extra for a private line.

Yes I remember having a party line as a child and if you picked up the phone too long to listen in someone would say for you to hang up and stop listening at their private discussions
I bet you made good money operating phone calls
Land line phones was very good business to be in. My late husband John was the telecommunications executive manager of UHaul.

You had to be sneaky. I think that private lines were an extra charge.

I remember those 'good' ole days. Few of those I knew had the money for long distance calls back then so most people I knew would save up to make those kinds of calls on holidays. Lucky for me I didn't have friends living outside my city yet.

A person-to-person call could be expensive.

When dad was stationed in Okinawa back in 1968 we'd call him on his birthday and at Christmas and lucky for mom the Red Cross helped her do that as a bonus for dad being in the military but we couldn't talk very long. About all we could do is say happy birthday or merry christmas before we'd have to end the call.

We didn't have a party line. But we did have a rotary phone for a short time when I was growing up.

Such an endeavor compared to our simplified ones today.
