Estate Sale Today

I went to an estate sale today. I love estate sales because it usually means everything in the house is for sale because someone died or downsized so they could move to a smaller place. Today's estate sale was because someone died and the house needed to be emptied out. The contents of this home were amazing. The man collected all kinds of vintage razors and lots of other stuff. The whole basement of the home was filled with mostly Christmas items but nothing vintage and that's what I like to buy to resell on eBay. Then there were all kinds of household items like dishes, pans, men's clothing, furniture, tablecloths, silverware, blankets, beach towels, and so much more. So I spent $29 and got a half-used bottle of vintage perfume, a vintage teddy bear, a small Pyrex bowl, a package of new paper plates, some vintage music, some fake small pumpkins to decorate with, and some Chrismas lights. I hope to make a profit on the vintage items, but only time will tell. Do you go to estate sales?

I've only been to one and that was when my daughter, now 34, was 5 or 6 years old. We didn't even buy anything, but were given two stuffies. Almost as soon as Pretty and I got out of our car an old lady grabbed Pretty's hand and started dragging her off saying she had something the two of us had to see... It turned out to be two "babies" that were in a sealed box in a room full of stuffed animals. The old lady opened the box and draped one baby over Pretty's shoulder and the other over mine. We walked around the property for a couple of hours looking at all kinds of things that were for sale there. When we were done looking, we tried to give the babies back to the old lady, thanking her for showing them to us. She insisted that she didn't want any money for them and had given them to us. They're still sitting in a chair in our living room. Our babies. Photo is mine.

@1creekgirl Thank you. I wrote about our babies before when the little elephant exploded several years ago. He looked like a cat had ripped holes in him. I sewed him back together. (We never did find out what happened to him. On the security cam it showed the two sitting quietly and then the elephant was lying beside the baby with his insides on the outside.)

Hey, they don't eat, they don't need diapers, they don't cry, and they're cute. Plus, that's a nice, sweet tale to remember!

I like estate sales, but my favorite is the old-time auctions, the auctioneers sell the contents of a house, usually because the owner passed away or they moved to a nursing home. Everything from furniture to linens to antiques, appliances, garden tools, lawn mower, cars, you name it, it gets sold. Plus, they are fun to go to. And they are usually outside. If it gets really hot, or if it rains, people leave. If you stay during the heat or the rain, you can get stuff really cheap, so I always stayed if I could. But I rarely go to them anymore, it's very tiring and I honestly don't need the stuff.

@MarieCoyle My Dad used to go to auctions in his town every other Friday night. There were lots of things from people's estates. They would call the auction company to come get all the suff and then the auctioneer would auction it all off. My Dad was a sucker and bought tons of stuff he didn't need but got it because it was a good deal. For a while, he and my mom were hosting yard sales and sold some of the stuff Dad would buy at the auctions. My parents have both passed away now and my brother and I took 8 dumpsters out of their home/property/porch and many of the items were still bearing stickers from that auction!!! Sad state of affairs.

@Kouponkaren Oh, my. I usually went with an intention in mind, like a piece of furniture or whatever. One of my aunts was a hoarder, a huge one. She got that way after my uncle passed away, she couldn't hardly throw away anything at all. My cousins removed so much stuff, it was just unreal. I get that, for sure.

@MarieCoyle That sounds like what was going in at my parents' house, except I think both my parents had hoarding tendencies. They never wanted to throw anything away in case they might need it in the future. Plus my mom was always afraid there was going to be another war...so "I might need that someday" became her mantra.

I never heard of estate sales here, but it would be interesting, I could SELL plenty of the stuff we do not use.

@LadyDuck Estate sales are when a family is cleaning out everything in the home. If you just have some stuff to sell, that would be more like a yard sale or a garage sale here in the states. That's where people set up tables and lay stuff for sale on them...in their driveway or in their garage.

@paigea It's so much fun to browse through them hoping for treasures even if you don't actually find any, right? It's the thrill of the hunt for me at least!

I have never been to one. Is there a way to find out where they have them? I haven’t had any near me that I know of.

You can look on Facebook. There are some small stores in my area that sell estate sale items/antiques that also put on estate sales. Also, there is a website called estate sales dot net that you can sign up for, and each week you will get a list of estate sales in your area.

@LeaPea2417 Oh, that's the opposite of me. I sell, you buy! I have a lot of vintage things from my family so I don't need to buy anything. What types of vintage items do you buy on eBay?

@JudyEv Thanks. It was so much fun. I love to treasure hunt. I get emails every week of upcoming estate sales, but many are 20 miles or more away, and with gas prices as they are, I try to stay closer to home.

I used to love estate sales when I lived in bigger cities. I haven't been to one or a garage sale in a while. But now that its summer time, I will probably try to catch a couple. I used to sell stuff at a consignment shop, and I would get furniture at yard/estate sales repurpose it and sell it at the shop. I go to thrift stores all the time though. It's a must when you have kids that outgrow stuff often.
