1962 Songs: Up on the Roof

Hey, now! I’m almost done with the alphabetical look at 60-year-old songs. The top ten will start (hopefully) on Sunday. Meanwhile, here’s another gem from 1962 that most of you will remember, either thanks to the classic original or the number of covers. Up on the Roof - The Drifters Hey, look, another Carole King song!! That’s right, in addition to having us do the Loco-Motion with her, she’s gonna see how far I’m progressing with my acrophobia! I just wrote a scathing opinion piece for my blog about how the Country Music Hall of Fame drags its feet with inducting people. The same applies to the folks in Cleveland, who took until 2021 to induct her (although, to be fair, they did put her and Gerry King in as songwriters in 1990). Oh, well. She’s in (twice), and so are the Drifters (1988, if you’re wondering….even if you aren’t, that’s when they went in ). And this song….ooh. It’s obviously about New York City (there are few places you need to escape to the roof to see “the stars put on a show for free” in the country ), but it’s universal. We all have our “roof” — literal or figurative — to escape to when this old world starts getting us down. God bless the brilliance of Carole King and the beautiful singing of the Drifters. Up on a Roof Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin Recorded by the Drifters Released as a single, 1962 All my cares just drift right into space:

@FourWalls Tell you honestly, I was born in the 70's, 1977 to be exact, however, with my father passionate with 60's music, I love 60's music too.

@luisga814 — a good year to be born, because you missed disco. I graduated from high school in 1977.

Great tune. A new fashion in some condos nowadays now too.

@FourWalls .......I wouldn't mind a getaway up on top. But in the heat of summer, I'm not so sure.

Yes, rooftop swimming pools became the rage and that kinda nipped the roof for being a place of serenity in the bud.

Can't possibly catch up with all your activity but I pick the music I love and this is one, In fact it reminds me of the days of childhood when I went up on the roof of our apartment building in Brooklyn ot help mom hang the laundry, How love on a sunny day with clear blue skies,

Great song. I can't get over how many of these I know at the moment. I guess it will change with the next of your series.

No doubt. But there’s still ten songs — my top ten favorites from 1962 — left!

Lots of great music from them, starting with the Clyde McPhatter years and moving on successfully after Clyde went solo. And those silly guys, once they went “Up on the Roof” they went “Under the Boardwalk.”

That’s quite understandable. It speaks so beautifully of escaping not only the cacophony of the city but the heat.

slope FUNFACT: The Drifters played at my grandparents' legendary boardwalk bar. The bouncers weren't going to let them in until they announced "we The Drifters!"

If you can't go to the beach like "Under the Boardwalk" then a city view complete with a tar roof (instead of sand) will do. But better watch those tootsies that tar gets awful hot up there! Both those songs are summertime classics to me!!!
