Ouch. I need a new ceiling. Not roof, ceiling. Long story about an old house, but that’s okay. Here’s the next song on my list of favorite tunes from 1962…and, oh, look, JJ will get to rant and rave about the songwriter again!!! #8: Crying in the Rain - Everly Brothers Not my fault, JJ. When you think of the Everlys you think of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant as their primary songwriters. I didn’t know until I looked it up that Carole King wrote this. (Oh, and her co-writer on this song will show up again, too….) This came about, per Picky Wedia, by a notion that Gerry Goffin (King’s songwriting partner and then-husband) had that they should get with another songwriting pair and swap partners and see what comes out. This was the only song that Carole King and “partner for a day,” Howard Greenfield, wrote together. They should have done more. What a beautiful heartbreak song by rock and roll’s great harmony duo. Crying in the Rain Written by Carole King and Howard Greenfield Recorded by the Everly Brothers Released as a single, 1962 I may be a fool:

I like that song although when I think about the Everly brothers, I much prefer Wake up little Susie.

With those harmonies they could sing anything. But I like the fun, upbeat songs a lot, too.

I remember a couple of their songs but not this one. Besides, it's way tooooooooooooooooooooo sad.

Aw, I’m sorry you find it too sad. Enjoy “Wake Up Little Susie” instead.

Oh, I’m sorry. It is sad, but there is optimism in the song (“some day when my crying’s done I’m gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun”).

Loved the Everly Brothers and didn't know this song was written by Carol King and Howard Greenfield. Carol King is a great singer/song writer

She’s one of the best. That’s the third song she co-wrote on this 1962 list!!!!

That songs seems tailor made for the Eeverly Brothers. What if Carol King had decided to sing it herself?

She was more a writer than a singer back then, but she did demo it:

Yeah, these youngsters singing stuff on break from the Marine Corps. Who do they think they are?

I just love this song as well as the one about walking in the rain, I guess you could do both walk and cry in the rain,

Picky Wedia says that “Just Walkin’ in the Rain” was written by two prisoners! And as the Dexy’s Midnight Runners song said, “Poor ol’ Johnnie Ray sounded sad upon the radio” when he sang it!

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Just not the part about these songs being 60 years old, though.

‘Tis what ‘tis. You know about old houses and repairs. It’ll get fixed, one way (and one thousand bucks) or another.
