Old Lady Chases Burgler

I'll bet this gunman in Lilburn, Georgia got the surprise of his life when an elderly lady chased him out of her house with her gun firing. Hannah Scott told police that she looked outside her window in the middle of the night and saw a vehicle parked outside. A little later she heard glass breaking and a pot she had in front of her back door shattering. When she heard the doorknob turn she grabbed her gun and shot through the door. She heard a loud yelp and fleeing footsteps. She followed and kept firing as the burglar ran away. He was long gone by the time the police arrived. But when the man, Harold Carter, checked in at the Medical Center in Snellville with a gunshot wound, he was charged with breaking and entering. That just might teach him not to try to break in on little old ladies.

She was lucky he didn't charge her with assault or intent to kill. The burglar must be inside the house before you can shoot at him. Or maybe that's just here in Ohio.

He was.lucky he was only wounded. Thank goodness they got him off the streets. He won’t be likely to try it again.

Not all states have that rule and it just means she would have needed to wait a few more seconds.

Imagine if she was unable to protect herself. Everyone needs some form of protection.

I'm surprised she got away with it. Here in TX the laws are so stupid that if you shoot someone who is not in your house they will put you in jail no matter what the circumstances are. TX may be big but it sure is stupid.

That was a surprise. He might have known the hospital would have to give a report.

@CarolDM I don’t know where he was shot. It must not have been very serious.

@RubyHawk So it sounds like he was also shot in the back, as he was running away.

Good for her. Too many are getting away with robbing and violence. They get arrested and let out the same day.

Good for her. I can't stand criminals, and in this case she made it very clear she was not going to be a target. I hope he learned a lesson, but I suspect he probably did not.

You could be right. He might just be more careful next time, like breaking in when nobody’s home.

@RubyHawk I don't know. Criminals are criminals, period. They don't much think about consequences.
