The speech therapist at our school made a comment the other day about the peanut butter recall. I had mentioned that on Monday and Tuesday we had sent a number of kids home with a stomach virus. I am pretty positive it was a virus, but she wondered if it was the salmonella from the Jif peanut butter. Her daughter had been ill. She checked her peanut butter and found that she had a recalled jar. Her daughter got better when they got rid of the peanut butter. I do not doubt her. I also believe that we were experiencing a contagious bug. I have not bought Jif in a few years, so I did not have any jars to check. How about you? Do you have any recalled peanut butter on hand?

I do not have any of that. Did the kids come back to school the next day?

The one we sent home Monday was back for the Wednesday half day. If you throw up at school you have to stay out the next day. Since we sent them home Tuesday they did not get to come back for Wednesday.

It seems an odd time of year for a stomach virus, but it was in several grades.

@GardenGerty It could have been the peanut butter.

No, I’ve long given up eating peanut butter. The only way I’ll eat it is in a Reese’s cup.

The recall actually has been expanded to commercial products made with Jif. I am not sure if Reeses falls in that category or not.

@GardenGerty True, because I always fear to get something containing peanuts and to end up at the ER.

No, Jiff peanut butter. I buy Walmart brand chunky peanut butter, it's cheaper. I love Skippy, though. Glad everyone is getting better!

It's sad that kids were sick and had to miss the school. Are they back to the school? I hope no one had any serious issues. Do you provide meals from school?

School is now out for the summer holidays. Food is available at school. For the last two years it has been paid for for all. Kids whose families meet certain income guidelines get free lunches or reduced price lunches. I like the foods they have been serving this year with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables available for kids to choose from.

Then you would be safe, I think. There was a list of over 100 products, not just peanut butter in containers, that would be possibly contaminated.

It was interesting to read the snack foods that are made with Jif. Still none that I buy. Lots of apples packaged with peanut butter for dipping.

I admit to being pretty casual about it, because I know I do not have Jif on hand. I did go read the list of other products as well, just in case.
