Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without

My (older) sister and her friends think that because school is out and I do not get checks through part of the summer that Bob and I may go without food.
That is not true, but they like to "help" by giving me foods they will not be eating. I say nothing, go home, put it in the pantry or freezer and do my best to get it used.
Friend "Ron" had been getting Meals on Wheels, but did not like the slice of bread they sent. I was given a grocery sack full of bread slices.
Reading some discussions on here, I got hungry for French toast, but did not want to fry any.
So I used the bread, a package of powdered eggs, reconstituted, and milk I needed to use up plus other tasty ingredients to make "baked French toast casserole".
That is what I had for breakfast. We will likely eat it all week with sides of sausage and eggs or fruit.
Food just costs more and more, so I do not mind being frugal one bit.

"French toast casserole" is just another way of saying "bread pudding".

This all comes in " commodities" for my sister and friends. Most of them do not even want to use them. I have used them quite successfully for a lot of things. I see where you can order them on Amazon.

@GardenGerty I remember they used to pickle eggs during WWII but my Mum said they were pretty gross.

No standing at the stove, either.

I would assume that you do the smart thing and carry your checks over a 12 month cycle so that your pay is based on an annual number as opposed to a monthly actual number—but either way I think it is funny people think that way. As for French toast casserole, never heard of it, but it does sound kind of yummy.

The split checks are not an option for me. At least not that I know of. So, I get a full check in June and the scraps more or less in July, nothing in August, then a bit of a trim check in September. July will be better than usual this year as I had three days left over after the last check, then got an unexpected gig for the ten days of driver's ed. Meanwhile I am looking at work from home stuff.

@GardenGerty What I am saying is that let's say you get an annual salary of $50,000 which is paid in the 9 months during the school year. You might get (all just for illustrative purposes) $5,555.56 per month and not receive any checks during the three month hiatus. Instead of taking the $5,555.56, you instead take $4,167.67 carrying the entire annual pay over a 12 month cycle instead of a 9 month cycle, putting the differences into savings so that during the three month hiatus you can still draw $4,167.67 even when there is no physical check coming in.

The same here. Foods are getting higher in prices.

@GardenGerty That's good for food security and sufficiency.

Right - lots of French toast posts here
. Ohhh, a French toast casserole sounds interesting . . . you can just bake it all at once instead of soaking and flipping all those slices! Yep - it sure makes sense to be frugal these days.

It was whole wheat bread and I was pretty pleased. I think next time I will mix the maple syrup into the batter, though. Hubby really liked it, and I will make it for my daughter and family when they come visit.

You quite probably can. Good use for stale bread.

That’s one thing about us older folks: we know how to make do with less. We grew up doing it.
