A thirty-eight-a-pede

Warning: If you don’t like creepy-crawlies, you might like to skip this. I snapped this centipede on a trip we did once on the Holland Track in quite an isolated region. However, he is not a centipede but a thirty-eight-a-pede. You can count his legs quite easily here. I love watching them move. I sometimes wonder if they ever have to learn to walk. Are they a bit awkward for a while like a foal or a lamb might be? Or do they just get on with it and walk without any hassles? And are they born alive or hatch from eggs? So, being me, I had to google it and it seems some species have live young and others lay eggs. In both cases, they will curl themselves the eggs/young to protect them. Now we all know – well, only if you’ve read the post, of course. Have a great day.

They’re helpful, eating “bad bugs.” If they were only cute instead of being so ugly.

And they have those nasty stingy bits too.

Actually Crawling creatures irritate me, but I can put up with them. Centipedes hurt a lot and may be harmful if bitten, which is something I despise about them.

@JudyEv Good thing they did not sting you when you step on them. Good thing they are not that many in here. I can see some centipede in here but they are usually harmless and they only stay on old rotting wood as they consume it.

I've accidentally unearthed one some years ago. It was curled around something but at the time I didn't know what, I covered it back up and left. I rarely kill if there's no reason to, centipedes eat insects and even mice sometimes. The ones I've seen were at least 6 inches long.

There's no way I could have swept one of those big ones into a dustpan, they're very fast and look mighty fierce.

I don't kill them usually. I might if it's in the house but these days I'm more inclined to sweep it into a dustpan and toss it outside.

I never wondered how they learn to walk, that is surely not easy with all those legs and feet... feet? Do they have feet?

Good point but I'm not sure. And I don't really want to get any closer to one to find out.

It wouldn't be good to be bitten by one. The bite would be very painful.

Centipede eats bad bugs. But honestly, I feel uneasy if I see it in my place.

So is a thirty-eight-a-pede a cousin of the centipede or it is a mutated centipede?

Interesting! I only like house lizards, crickets & daddy long legs spiders indoors. Outdoors, ladybugs, butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies is what I like to see. Huge insect 38-a-pede, it is.

I was bitten by one in Georgia once, while sitting on a friend's patio. Talk about painful. So I steer clear of them. I agree, they are very interesting, but I don't want to hang out with them!

That's interesting that the ones there are beneficial. Perhaps our aboriginal people have a purpose for these.
