The first day of the summer, the longest day of the year and the summer solstice officially arrived today, on Tuesday, June 21.
The hot weather arrived in the U.S. and Europe before the summer solstice with heat waves sending temperatures into the 100s F. We are getting another wave of heat and humidity this week.
The summer solstice, officially at 5:13 a.m. ET, marks the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere when the Earth is at the point in its orbit where the North Pole is at its maximum tilt toward the sun, according to Almanac.com.
It’s the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year in the Northern Hemisphere. The June solstice marks the start of winter in the Southern Hemisphere and is the shortest day of the year there.

All I can say is thank goodness for the AC. I will be inside most of the day.

I agree on the AC. The sad part is that days will start getting shorter. :-( Enjoy the warm days and sunshine while you can!!!

It is comfortable here right now, I think it will go up to a high of 84. I think the rest of the week will be hotter, and naturally more humid as well...

Oh the longest day went and I kind of ignored it as I have been very occupied offline!
It's something interesting to talk about and observe.
Longer days have their advantages as we can do a lot of things even till 7.30/8 pm.
But yes, the extreme heat is difficult to manage at times.

Yes I heard it in the news longest day of the year. Usually 6pm is dark already but now it is not.

Yes, today is the longest day of the year and for us the winter solstice starts as days will get shorter day by day for the winter to set in. The picture looks beautiful.

@CarolDM I don't enjoy when it's too cold for it becomes difficult to work. Of course in India roses blossom mostly in winter.

People celebrate at Stonehenge on the summer solstice. It feels that summer has been here forever at this point. Hard to believe it's the first day.
