Crazy cats giving me gray hair

The temperature dropped a little and a breeze picked up. I went outside about 8:30 to do some yard work. There is an abandoned house and garage next door, full of furniture and stuff. The lady's son mows the front yard, and that is it. The garage is where all the stray cats tend to hang out, as well as my cats if they take a notion. There are lots of small trees around and all kinds of birds. The birds will chase each other and any cats and whatever other intruder they perceive. The birs were truly raising a ruckus and I thought nothing of it. Angel was inside, and so was Bitty. Tinker and Lady were out front. The bird noise intensified and I look up and see a stray, yowling cat running around the far west side of the house--the side away from me. It was being chased by a coyote. The coyote saw me and took off toward the grove of cedar trees two lots away. I try to get my cats in, and Angel comes busting out of the house. She and Lady, and Tinker take off chasing the coyote, until he gets to the next empty lot. No clue what they would have done with him if they caught him, but it sure makes me concerned.

Maybe you aren't feeding them enough? Coyote would make good cat chow, in my opinion.

They have food and treats anytime they want it, they just have to come in the house. I think they eat a lot of rodents and birds as well.

@GardenGerty And maybe snack on coyotes... I understand you give them enough to eat. And yeah, all cats will catch their own food when they're outside.

Scary! I have been told that coyotes are around, but the only one I ever saw was out near where Viv worked in about 2006 or so.

I live very rural, but we had them in our previous town as well. They adapt well to city conditions and live out of trash cans, etc. Very adaptable and opportunistic.

@GardenGerty I know you are rural, heck - your previous town was pretty rural - whereas, I live in the 11th largest city in the U.S. The coyote I saw was in an area that hadn't been built up - yet. Now it does. The story I heard about them down at a creek nearby was in an older suburb that was built at a time when the area around it was out in the country. I also heard a story from my dentist that he lived in an area of town called "Hyde Park" and the creek that runs through it, Waller Creek, had a small coyote pack. One of his neighbor's lost a chicken to the pack and they started keeping their cats and smaller dogs in, only walking the dogs not letting them out in the backyard.

I have not seen bob cats but suspect they are also around. Not sure about the puma/panther/mountain lion.(it has a lot of names). We may be too far east for them. I have also had foxes in my yard.++++++

@GardenGerty well we might not have coyotes but we do have a busy street right near by and my friends have already lost three outside cats to the street. Seems they know how to be careful like the kittens mama but for the three of them it ended badly.

If the lady and her son might have killed the coyote it's very cruel of them. I don't like people pestering animals and birds.

No, the lady and her son do nothing with their property. I like it better when the coyote stays in a more wild place.

@CarolDM Hubby says the single ones do not howl, only the ones in packs. To me that is scary. I used to listen to them at night at my grandparents'.

My long ago and far away cat Mona used to chase the landlady's dog... I guess Angel, Lady and Tinker figured they had the advantage of numbers when they took off after the coyote.

For some reason I don't think they would have caught that coyote. I knew you would say the cats went next door. Lol

Not much telling. If he had stood to fight they might have caught him. We have so many abandoned and derelict properties here in town. It attracts pests.

Yes, that is what would be logical. He would more likely try to sneak up on them if he could.

My little cat chased a huge racehorse goanna when it got near her kittens. Sometimes they simply seem to have no fear.

Your cats aren't afraid of coyote. They scared it away. Coyote doesn't like cats and prefer the birds.

If enough cats get together to fend one off they can really do some damage. I haven't seen what a coyote would get out of it but I've seen the aftermath of a husky that a group of feral cats beat up on, they got to his ears some but thankfully not his belly. Cats can be mighty scary if they're intent on beating on ya.

That’s what pets do for a living….especially cats! You have to somehow convince them they are NOT lions, despite being in the same general feline family. I mean, I’m human and so’s a brain surgeon but that doesn’t mean I can do brain surgery!

Exactly. Tinker also thinks he can fly, or at least jump really high in pursuit of birds.

I think I would be keeping them locked in. Cat is a favorite food of coyote. It wont be going anywhere while all those are around.

Bitty is the only one I am being really strict with. The coyote does not seem to be very successful. We have at least one adult feral cat that hangs around here a lot.
